Jeepers. Another issue for Katie. She had a well-child visit on Tuesday and her ped ordered a blood test to rule out thyroid problems. Oh sh*t. He called us personally last night at 9:00pm (what a great man!) to inform us that the test came back positive and that she needs more bloodwork to check levels for medication dosage purposes. This poor little Boo is facing so much sh*t in the next month that my heart just aches for her. Every morning I awaken with a sense of dread, just one day closer to her diagnostic work in December to determine treatment for her sleep apnea. Flippin'-A...... Thanks for letting me vent.....no replies necessary....I just needed a good whine....Can anyone recommend a good WINE,lol!!!! Gina 13yo G 10yo BGG

Believe it or not, the thyroid is the ONLY thing working on my daugher's petuatory gland. Right now, the biggest issue is keeping her sugar level up which is done with feedings every 3-4 hours and steroids. She will also need injections for growth stimuation. Let's just say we spend lots of time at the endocrynolgist office. I definitely feel for you on the thyroid issue because I have the same issue personally. What a pain!!
As far as wine if you like white wine, Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio is a good choice.

Hmmmm.....I am going grocery shopping tomorrow. I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. TONIGHT, it is going to be rum and coke! I am sorry to hear about your dd's issues. It is so hard to see our children endure so much! Gina 13yo G 10yo BGG

No way! Oh, poor Katie! Sweet little thing. Malena does not have thyroid issues (well, we'll see again in Jan. when she gets her 4 yr), but Joshua has been hypothyroid since 5 months old. He has been on medication since then and goes about every since months (or sometimes sooner) for a check up with the endo. He has so many things going on, but some doctors do believe that the thyroid issue is PART of the reason he is small. There are so many things going on with him (hypothyroid, PDA, VSD, undescended testicle, etc.), I'm not really sure what hypothyroid issue is causing and what something is causing, so I can't really let you know what to expect, other than medication every day. But this should help with growth, and I've heard it also helps with cognition.

Maryann, Katie's ped also mentioned the cognitive aspect also! After my rum and coke (Thanks Ruth!) I'm going to do more digging on the internet.

Thanks Bea. I am not as freaked about the thyroid issues anymore, but I am still nervous about the sleep apnea stuff. It will somehow be a relief when there is a "game plan" in place. The principal at the kids school, has a dd that had cranio-facial surgery. I think she is having one more that sounds very similar to the one Katie may be having. It is somewhat of a comfort to know that someone else is facing similar issues. He has invited me to pop into his office to chat. Gina 13yo G 10yo BGG

Gina, this may be a sensitive question, but is Katie overweight? Aside from the obvious link to the hypothyroidism, the combination of an enlarged thyroid and additional fatty tissue in the neck could contribute to that sleep apnea. When my thyroid was at its most enlarged I snored ALOT and according to my husband had apnea spells. I often woke up with a very sore throat from the snoring, and a few times "snorted" myself awake. Once my thyroid returned to a normal size, and along with the weight loss, according to my husband, I no longer snore except when I've been drinking
Did he mention a thyroid ultrasound? She could have a goiter pressing on her windpipe from the back contributing to the apnea... I did. MTM - mom to Michael(84),Stephan(85), Thomas, Matthew and Kathryn - born 12/27/99 at 32w 0 days

Ruth, Nope, Katie only weighs 58lbs and wears a childs size 10. The only symptom she really had was constipation issues (several toilet pluggers, lol). Her doc orders a TSH every few years to rule it out, as it is relatively common in people with Downs, and this time it came back positive. She had more blood work today and it has been comfirmed, she has a hypothyroid. I just picked up her meds and she will get her first dose in the morning. We have to repeat the bloodwork in a month to check her levels and if the meds are working.
Hmmm....drinking....thanks for reminding me Ruth. I planned on making myself a rum and coke (or two...) tonight and forgot all about it! Yumm Yumm rum rum! LOL!
