#3524, "update on Katie///visit w/plastic surgeon today"
Mon Dec-17-07 01:41 PM by 4kds4me

, today was the consult with the ped plastic surgeon who, by the way, has probably the BEST bedside manner that I have encountered to date.
Plan A--re-removal of adeniod tissue. Yes, her adenoids have grown back! Woohoo! That IS good news! She also has significant scar tissue on one side of where her tonsilectomy was preformed. These soft tissue surgeries will be preformed in Madison as soon as we can get them scheduled. We will then need to repeat the sleep study to guage the improvement with her osa, if any.
Plan B--if the improvement of her osa isn't significant enough--is surgery on her deviated septum. One side of her nostril is completely blocked. They do not want to preform this surgery along with the soft tissue stuff because the soft tissue surgery will be painful enough. And why do it, if there is a 50/50 chance of her osa improving enough in which she will be getting adequate enough oxygen.
Plan C--the cranio-facial surgery. My main question to the plastic surgeon was vain---Will it change her appearance? Her response, Yes significantly. NOT what I wanted to hear! Matt and I happen to think that that "Downsy" look is a positive atribute in people with Downs. It is the way that God made them, therefore, perfection. However, the plastic surgeon reminded us that we would not be doing the surgery purely for cosmetic reasons, and of course we do realize that. But imagine the appearance of your own child to change significantly.
Plan D--the dreaded trache.

So that is the gist of it. Pray that we will have to go no further than Plan A, Plan B at the worst.

Oh Gina, this actually does sound like promising news. I pray, pray pray you will only get to Plan A or B.

I know what you mean about the appearance. I just LOVE my little Munchkin with adorable little button nose!

Any updates, Gina?

I know I haven't posted lately, but I have been reading and keeping up with your Katie! Jana is doing well in 1st grade. She will still wear her AFOs in the mornings at school without complaint (I am sure that will change soon though!) and we just finished up another round of Botox injections in her calves. She is doing remarkably well. She and her sisters just enjoyed a hip hop dance camp today. It was very cute just to see how coordinated she has become! She was also dismissed from PT last week. We were shocked but pleasantly surprised. She will likely go again in the summer since we have struggled with bike riding skills.

Keep us posted about Katie! We do care, but sometimes just don't get around to posting!
