#3868, "Prolific Hearing loss"

Today my son Colton was diagnosed with “prolific hearing loss”. Tomorrow he is going to be fitted for hearing aids. The Specialists said that we will try those out for 6 months and then after that if they are working then we will stay with the hearing aids. If the hearing aids don’t work then we will consider cochlear implants. Do any of you have any experience with this?? If so I would love to hear about it. Also are there things that I should ask the audiologist tomorrow. I always think of things after our appointments are over.

Thanks

Tanna

Preston my grandson is deaf also, we tried the aides and he would not keep them on. He got his first implant a couple of months ago and is doing great. Normal hearing is between 20 and 25 decimals and he is hearing between 25 and 30 and it can still be adjusted more. I hope he does well.

My four year old also has a profound hearing loss. She tried hearing aids for a while, and now is in the stages of getting a cochlear implant. She should be having the surgery in about a month. I sign with her, but she choses to read lips. I went to school(before the triplets) to become a sign language interpreter, so I knew sign already and wasent nervous when I found out she had a hearing loss. And now she wont sign! I hear alot of people say "its great you teach your kids baby sign", really we sign so my little one can understan Good luck with the aids. Let me know if you have any questions about the process.

Hi Tanna,
2 of mine have profound hearing loss. They did hearing aides for 7 months no improvements and have had their cochlear implants for 1 year and 1 month now. We also do SEE Sign with them. It stands for Signing Exact English. Total Communication (in my humble opinion) has been the best way for us. We are definitely a signing family. You can e-mail me with any questions.

One of my sons is profoundly deaf. We found out after they were born my husband and I are carriers of the Connexin 26 gene which causes hearing loss. He received bilateral cochlear implants at 13 months. He will be hearing one year on July 23rd. He is doing amazing and no one who meets him even realizes he is deaf. At his six month post implant evaluation he had already caught up to his actual age in his receptive language and was only behind 3 months in his expressive. I am so pleased with his implants and thrilled we were able to do it.

I am part of the parent panel at the facility where my son was implanted. If you want to contact me directly please feel free to email me jennifer.wallace27@verizon.net
