#3886, "GFCF for a 1 year old?"

I am thinking that I might have to go the GFCF route for one of my triplet one year olds. He is just coming off of baby food and starting to take table foods. I am finding it VERy hard to find stuff to feed him. Has anyone gone GFCF this early? Also if I decide not to give him whole milk then what the heck do I give him? Fortified rice milk maybe?

We started at 18months because of Celiac disease diagnosis. Before you go with the GF diet, you should determine if there are markers for Celiac first because it takes regular exposure to wheat to trigger the test. Once you are gluten free the test is inaccurate.

At this early age if you do go to that diet here is a sample of what we used all the time:

Rice Crackers with nutbutters
Rice krispie treats-homemade with GF cereal
Fruit leather (no dyes)
gluten free pastas with marinara dip
Gluten free- nitrate free Corn Dogs
Gluten Free chicken nuggets
Gluten Free Pancakes and Waffles
Sweet Potatoe fries
GF Tater tots
Rice Casserole
Veggie Chips
Frito Lay has a list of Gluten free snacks on their website
Dried Fruit

They do have fortified (enriched) rice milk so be sure to look for that for his calcium needs. Rice milk is very low in protein though so try to add more protein to the diet if you go with rice milk. You also might do a google search for some calcium powder you can add to foods that he will eat. We did not go GFCF until 4 years of age so I'm not much help on food suggestions. Maybe finding a good nutritionist in your area might be of some help. Good luck and HTH!

If you check out the DAN! doctor, they will have a nutritionist they work with that deals with the diet. Don't get me wrong, I'm not all about DAN doctors. We tried it but I just could not do the diet with my son as his diet was horrible. Now I'm thinking it's just behavioral.. anyway, I digress!

If you go with a nutritionist, go with a DAN one. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies. The GFCF diet is so overwhelming! Luckily, my DS is not picky......yet. He still will pretty much eat anything I feed him. I just feel like the GFCF diet is so limited but that is probably because it is new to me.
