#3907, "Forward facing carseat for daughter with no trunk/head ..."

Our Emily has limited trunk or head control. We are already seeing many specialists and Early intervention is helping as well. We just realized, however that moving her into her rear facing carseat (just switched today-she is 10 months & 21 lbs.) will be short-lived as she is very long and will need to be turned around. Unfortunately, she will not be able to be reclined safely in that seat when forward facing and we don't know what type of seating is available for her when that time comes. Additionally, we aren't planning on moving the other two out of their infant carriers until necessary and don't want to open up both the other car seats if Emily will need something else

Does anyone know of a forward facing car seat that reclines safely and has adequate head support that will be able to handle her when she is too long to be rear facing?

Thanks,
Geoff and Aimee in NJ

We have the same issue as you with our Caysen. We use to Eddie Bauer Car seats. They recline quite a bit. http://www.overstock.com/Baby/Eddie-Bauer-Deluxe-3-in-1-Convertible-Car-Seat/3235751/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11346653
They also have these http://store.schoolspecialtyonline.net/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?sname=CAR§ion=10088&item=88318&item_name=Britax%20Traveller%20Plus%20Adapted%20Car%20Seat%20-%20Tan Britax Car seats sold through the abilitations catalogue. This seat is supposed to be designed for children with special needs, however, I've never seen how it differs from the one that we have, especially for the price.

There is also an Eddie Bauer pillow (couldn't find the link) that they sell at BRU. It's adjustable and slides onto the back of the car seat's etc... We use this pillow for a lot of Head postitiong things with Caysen. It's blue denium and they sell it near the strollers.

First, thanks for your reply. This looks like it could be perfect. Does it recline significantly while forward facing?

Also- Congratulations on Cayson's crawl earlier this week.

Just wanted to let you know that we also use the Eddie Bauer seat with our son Chase who has limited head control. Our PT actually switched it for us to front facing in May and he is 2.5 now. I think she may have slight reclined the bucket seat of the minivan to get it to recline a bit.

PS. Deborah- way to go Caysen! How awesome.

It does recline significantly. And, like the pp said if you recline the seat that's in, it does go back a little further.
Thanks for remember Caysen!

I have heard that the government is now recommending parent to keep their children facing to the rear until they are at least 30 lbs. Studies show that in auto accidents were children are rear facing end up with fewer injuries. So maybe you could pull it off a little longer to have her face the rear.
I work for an insurance company and investigate lots of auto accident. After what I have seen I will be keeping my babies facing the rear as long as possible.
Good luck and I hope you find a solution that works best for you all!

Aimee,

I remember reading that in Europe kids are rear facing - often til 4 yrs old are so. There are carseats that can remain rear facing until 30lbs or more. I know it's not as convenient but it is much more safe.

We had the Evenflo Triumph. It is heavy but is a great seat and very, very easy to adjust. I loved that it had no straps hanging down. The straps are tightened & loosened using a dial. It can be rear facing up to 35lbs.

If I had a child with poor head control I would not face them forward until absolutely necessary.

Marie

Edited to add: I didn't realize I was in the Spec. Needs forum - didn't mean to intrude but wanted to leave this post as I think this is a good carseat - esp. when you need to rear face longer.
