#3928, "SCD for autism spectrum?"

Has anyone done the specific carbohydrate diet with their children on the autism spectrum? I am considering this but it looks quite restrictive. I am thinking of trying it myself before doing it with the kids. Has anyone done it and what was the experience like? Thanks for any information!

Hi!

I have done SCD with my son-autism and nonverbal. We started this last November. We saw an almost immediate change. He was happier, more social and started babbling again. Then about a week or so later he started a couple word aproximations. Then he had a couple small words-eat, up. I ended up going off the strict SCD diet even thought I didn't want to. School snacks were just too tough. When I heard he chased another kid down for his gluten-free pretzels I figured I had to give in a bit. So he does get GF snacks now but foods are still SCD. We have had amazing gains. We also recently added Liquid carnosine and I can' tell you how much this has helped. Diet was by far the biggest change producer. If their guts are bad they aren't getting anything out of their foods, supplements, vitamins. We had done the same carnosine before and didn't get these results. He now has words he can use and is so social and interactive. This past weekend we had the triplets fourth birthday party. This was the first time since he was one year old that I have pictures of him laughing and smiling for the camera. He was so goofy and having a blast!

I recently tried going SCD with my daughter. She had a pdd-nos dx but I don't think she would be considered on the spectrum any more. For her, going GFCF was key and she made huge gains really fast. A few months ago she couldn't even answer a basic question about what she did during the day-now she has conversations and asks me questions. I can't even explain how much these kdis have changed over the last couple months.

SCD is worth a try. It got everything rolling for my son and is helping my daughters gut. It is tough, but is totally worth it. And when you see the gains, you are more motivated. Go to pecanbread.com and you will get tons of support.

Thank you for the information. It is so wonderful that son had such great results and your daughter is doing well on GFCF. Diet sure is amazing. My daughter has known yeast problems and I can't help but think SCD might help even more with that. We have had good results with GFCF so far. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It is great to hear such a positive story!

Good luck with it! My son was also a big yeast kid--we do the Brainchild yeast protocol and it seems to work great. I just can't give him the garlic as it really stinks! We just do the herbs. Google Brainchild-I can't remember if the address is brainchild.com or maybe brainchildnutritionals.com to get more info of that. I know our family thought we were nuts when we started SCD but after that is when everyone kept commenting on the big changes they saw in my son.
