#3964, "Toddler bed for Anna?!"

Hey moms of down syndrome kids, when did you move your child from a crib to a toddler bed? Anna will be 5 in September but still is in a crib (she's almost 30 lbs so still a great fit) but she LOVES beds. I know she will really love it and I've actually had my mom buy her one for her birthday.

I'm just wondering how other moms have faired with the switch. Anna has a mind of her own and I'm worried about her leaving her room. We have a 2 story home and besides the scare of falling down the steps (my room is at the stairs and I'm sure I'd hear her if she got to the top of them) but she also loves to throw everything over the banister.

Just wondering what you all have done.

Thanks!

I moved Parys into a bed about two months ago.She is three and a half and weighs 21 lbs. She could of stayed in a crib for a while longer, but I was redecorating her room, that she shares with my five year old, and I wanted her in a "big girl" bed. She does fine. She is not tall enough to open doors yet, so i just close the door so she cant get out. Maybe you can put a gate at the top of the stairs so she cant get downstairs so if she does leave her room at least she will stay upstairs. Let me know how the transition goes.

Malena moved to a big girl bed when they were all three. Mostly because the boys were getting out and climbing into her bed, then she started climbing out, too. YES, she does roam the hall when she get sup in the morning (usually way before me). I have put a gate at the top of the stairs that she cannot undo, and doesn't seem to mess with, but she has gotten into cabinets, which are now locked. All doors are locked (except mine and her toy room). I learned that one the hard way, when I foudn the bathroom flooded one morning.

Good luck!

Don't feel bad my little guy turned 5 in May and I just switched him and his 3 yr old brother. He doesn't have downs but he has a lot of dev issues. Surprisingly he is doing better then I thought he would do. When we put them to bed it takes them awhile to stop goofing around but once he settles down he is good to go. I was worried about them staying in bed. But he is doing pretty good. But we thought about putting a child proof lock on the inside so they can't get out. So that is just a thought.

Good luck
