#3982, "Am I the only one who can't potty train my almost 5 yea..."
|
Please tell me I'm not the only one!
Two of my triplets are on the spectrum (high functioning). Max still isn't potty trained. They turn five on November 20th.
We have worked with Max for at least six months, but in June we started using underwear instead of pull-ups & made it part of our daily routine.
For the last three months, we have been sitting on the potty every 30 minutes (a timer rings), he receives stickers for each success. When he fills up his sticker chart (possible to fill it up 3-4 times per day), he gets to choose a "prize" from the prize box (box full of matchbox cars, his favorite thing in life). If he stays dry all day, we also take him to the store to choose a "prize". We have picture schedules & even have a special matchbox book, that he only looks at while on the potty. Three full months later, he is fine walking around wet & poopy. He also throws a fit, when it is time to sit on the potty. Is it possible, that he isn't ready, or is he just being stubborn?
Help!

It seems you're doing everything you're supposed to do. The only thing I can think of is - is the sticker he gets a reward he wants? For my son, that wouldn't have been "immediate" enough. (not saying they are the same, God knows each one is different). We used Krispie Kremes but my son was HUGE on these. He only got them if he went, not for just sitting. Maybe, give him the matchbox car if he goes on the potty. If he stays dry for the day, reward him with a big toy at the store. It sounds expensive, but maybe he needs a "bigger" reward that is more immediate. I don't know - it's the only thing we really did that was different than your schedule. Ann

Melinda I also have one that is a hold out. She does wear underwear during the day and urinates in the potty but she uses a pull-up to poop. She refuses to sit on the potty for pooping. She is 4 1/2. Everyone tells me it will come with time. Are your kids on the GFCF diet? I heard that will help but we have been on it since April and still no poop on the potty. I do think it has helped my daughter in many other ways though. I hope both are kids are fully trained soon!! Hang in there. Tracey GGG 2/04
