Hello everyone! Well, I just have a quick question for some of you but not sure whether I should post here or the Vets forum. I'll just let it ride and see where it takes me I guess....

My youngest triplet, Carly, has been having anxiey at school (2nd grade). She has always been my nervous, scared, timid little girl. Well, it is seriously affecting her grades, yup 2 1/2 weeks into school. I study with them all at home for tests and quizzes when I do know that they are coming up. For example, she had a spelling test of 15 words on Friday and she knew them all without fail at home and did fabulous. She goes into school and I guess panicked and got at 54 or U, as they grade it. HUH?? She did the same for a science test. She brought home the U and I read the test with her and she got all but 2 right (out of 15 questions). HUH, again? Why does she do fine at home and become completely lost at school. I spoke to her teachers (she is in an inclusion classroom) and they said they can not do anything to help her because she is considered regular ed. I had her tested for an IEP last year but she tested way to good for that. This brings me to the thought of her needing a 504 with modifications to help her a bit. She knows the work but just cannot do it in a large group setting, ANXIETY!!! So with all this info what do ya think? I have an appt at the peds on Monday to see if she can diagnose her with some sort of anxiety so she can get modifications and really show them what she can do, if given the right atmosphere and direction. Help, I want to cry because there are still months left of school and my little girl feels like crap and with each failing grade she is pushed down even further and then gets nervous AGAIN..... Anyone else deal with this and what did you do? Thank so much!!

Hi,

I am just wondering a couple of things. If your daughter is having a problem with testing maybe they can do it verbly or in a different setting. I'm not sure what or if your daughter has special needs but maybe the classroom is to distracing or something.

Also my typical daughter was struggling with math and reading and I think mostly because she is very shy and if she didn't understand something in class she was hesitent to ask the teacher and then just was lost for the rest of the lession. I have her in the small group reading and math skills classes and she does so much better in the small group becasue she knows she can ask if she is stuck.

Maybe be your daughter does get nervous when tested the traditional way. So maybe a smaller room to test or someone reading the test along with her the way you test her at home. My nephew gets his test verbaly so schools can make adjustments when needed. It can't hurt to ask.

I hope this helps.
Good luck!

Julie

Julie, thank you so much for replying!! Carly did tell me that her teacher talked to her today. They moved her desk to the front of the room and her 1 special ed teacher will be removing her (with other children) to another room for tests. Carly said that she "can't make the butterflies go away when it's test time". I know that they won't modify her tests, reading them for her for example, unless they have a diagnosis (from the DSM) from a dr stating that she qualifies for a 504 with modifications. We live in NY and they are very strict on what a child can get based on qualifications, it is truely sad. If a child needs anything special you got to get the drs diagnosis. GRR! This is all fine but I am trying to get the ball rolling but I have to see her peds first and go from there. All this takes so much time and I am afraid we will be 1/2 way through 2nd grade when they finally get everything ironed out. I am always willing to go to bat for my children especially when it is about their education and well-being. Fortunately, the schools knows this and are coming around on trying to help her until I get the dr situation straightened out. We have an appt on Monday after school so wish me luck.

You might google Aspbergers, a high functioning form of autism. A lot of these children carry a hight level of anxiety but are developmentally on track and usually very bright. I only suggest this because a lot children get misdiagnosed with generalized panic disorder that might be Aspberger.
