#4013, "Questions re GFCF/yeast free diet"

My DS has Autism, and we looking into the GFCF diet and yeast-free diet. I am really at the very early stages of gathering info about the diets. I am completely confused and unsure what to do since he is such a picky eater and the diets are so restrictive.

For the GFCF diet, I was wondering did any of you ladies have your child tested to see if they had allergies/ sensitivity to such things like milk, wheat, soy? The few things I have read suggested testing for allergies/sensitivity first before you start the diet. Did the results change your mind about the diet? I’ve also read something that also suggested a peptin urine test to see if proteins were being broken down properly, I asked our peds office and they had not idea of what I was talking about. Is anyone familiar with this test?

I’ve also read about the benefits of removing yeast from the diet. However, I can’t figure out who can determine if my DS has a yeast problem. Is this something I can just go to my regular peds office or do I have to go to a specialist, like a GI doc?

Thank you!

A DAN(defeat autism now) doctor will probably be the only doctor that will know what you are talking about when it comes to the tests you are interested in. They can do the food sensitivity testing and the yeast tests.
Here's some info about DAN's and a listing of them by state:

Good luck and let me know if you have questions, we have been doing the DAN protocol for almost 6 years now. It is a lot of info to take in at once but well worth it in the long run.

I responded on another post but I would suggest an IgG allergy test through US biotek.

http://www.usbiotek.com/

We did the 96 food panel and it testes for dairy, soy and grains including wheat. We are working with a naturopathic doctor. Most of the tests your pediatricians and GI doctors perform will not be helpful if you have a child on the spectrum. We had a stool and blood test for yeast through our local lab but both came back negative. However, our naturopath informed us that does not rule out a yeast problem because yeast will often be dead by the time it comes out in the stool. It could be living the GI tract. I believe if your child is on the spectrum it is likely that he may have a problem with yeast so it would probably be wise to avoid it until instructed otherwise.

For an ND- http://www.naturopathic.org/findannd.php
