#4076, "enzymes for gfcf diet kids"
|
I read a book on using digestive enzymes to help kids who need the GFCF diet ("Enzymes for Autism" can't remember author, sorry!) so we decided to try it. We have been trying the enzymes off and on for months in foods that may have a little dairy but nothing major like cheese or milk. My dd has done great, no problems tolerating the casein as long as she takes the enzymes. So this week we took the plunge and put shredded cheese on her eggs and she was fine, I'm amazed. I think we are going to stick with the enzymes and slowly add casein back in. I wish we would have tried this years ago, much easier than the diet!! So tell me more.......we have not started the diet yet, mostly because of me dragging my feet, but I feel completely guilty about it. Do you have to be on the diet first to cleanse your system or can you just start up the enzymes and continue to eat normally. I would love more info and am so glad your daughter is responding so well!!
ETA: BTW, how much on average do the enzymes cost? Are they liquid, pill, powder??? Katie

I ordered the Houston enzymes, after doing lots of research found that they are the only ones that claim to be able to be used instead of the GFCF diet. Their website has a lot of info about what to take http://www.houston-enzymes.com. I'm not an expert but I would think you could try the enzymes first, see if they respond to them instead of starting the diet. It took me a while to figure out what she needed and we ultimately got the TriEnza, I think it's around $40 for a big bottle. We do the pills, I think they have a powder but I'm not positive. Good luck, I hope it works for you. I'm just so excited right now it is working for us after years of special diets, we went to a restaurant tonight and I just gave her enzymes with dinner instead of having to talk to the chef, check ingredients, etc. etc. it was SO nice! Jessica This is very exciting!! I have not tried enzymes with DD yet but hearing your experience gives me hope! Thanks for sharing. I am going to google and invest in the book you mention. Enjoy your dairy and freedom to try some new foods! WooHoo! Tracey GGG 2/04
