#4083, "Cochlear Implant help..."

My daughter, Cassara, had her surgery for the Cochlear implant on Oct. 30, 2008. The surgery went amazingly well. Recovery was great, but did notice she had absolutly no hearing after surgery. She has auditory neuropathy, so her hearing turns on and off. So the implant was turned on this past Friday and Im not sure how to tell if she is hearing us or not. I understand she has to "relearn" to hear because she is hearing us completly different than before, but she acts like her hearing is totally off. Is this normal? Do you think it is too soon to tell if it worked? I guess I am nervous that we ruined everything that we have been working on, hearing wise, for the last four and a half years. Thanks in advance for any input.

It will take her a while to learn to listen. Preston was implanted in April and turned on in May. He was like a newborn he had to listen for sound. He is doing wonderful. He has been hearing 6 months and had his second implant 10 days ago. You did the right thing she will adjust. Her hearing being clear may confusse her but
over time she will hear as well as we do. You did the right thing. They can make adjustments. Best of luck keep me updated.

thank you so much for your reply. When I sit and look at her sometimes I wonder if I made the right decision. Before she was implanted, She could hear sometimes and she understood us. Now I feel like she is clueless on what is being said to her. I will give it time and just keep working with her. Thanks again
