#4086, "Cochlear Implant Question"

Question, for those of you have had the Cochlear Implant done I have a few questions:

1) The Dr that we are looking at only does one implant at a time but I was really wanting them both done at the same time. Do you think it is better having them done at one time or seperate?

2) What implant did you go with and why?

3) Will I need to take off work for the whole process and if so how long? We will be having the surgery in Jan but I'm needing to let my work know ASAP about how many days I will be needing off. If I am needing to take a lot of time off I may use FMLA.

I think that is it for now.

Thanks!!

Tanna

Hi Tanna.
I am not an expert on implants in any way. My daughter just recieved her first one on Oct. 30. Her dr. also only does one at a time. I think they want to see if one will work before they do the second. My daughter had her surgery on a thursday and we went up the the mountians and stayed in a cabin the next morning. She was fine. I just gave her motrin and she didnt need anything stronger than that. The surgery is fairly quick(1.25 hrs.). We went with the nucleus freedom. I chose that one because it was water resistant and it hadn't had any recalls in the past. It seem to be the most "child friendly" The audiologist later told me I had made a great choice. She said that is the one she would have chosen also. I think if you took off for the surgery itself your child would be fine with a babysitter the next day. They can give your child motrin if he is fussy and the wound will be bandaged, so I think he should be fine. I would just let the sitter know he will need more attention/love that day. HTH
