#4182, "Does anyone else feel like this?"
|
SO Ryans diagnosis is still pretty new, we still dont have an ABA therapist but have been lucky enough to have ppl in our lives that have helped guide us a bit until we have the appropriate therapy for him. We have all of them in a class or therapy everyday and have been doing therapy at home and we have seen improvement with Ryan in his speech, I am thinking he is doing GREAT........ I know he still has many issues that are ahead but I am trying to be positive.....
Does it still feel like a kick in the gut when someone recognizes issues in your child? That is my question.
We have been going to classes and other kids program, we have had a couple of instructors pull us aside and want to address Ryan. I guess I have been in denial a bit because I dont want him "labeled" and its not going to change how the class is run only how the instructor looks at him, KWIM BBG 6/21/06

For WI residents to get ABA therapy, we have to wait 18mo to 2 years. We have about 3 months to go.
Maggie was kicked out of a swimming class and gymnastics class at the Y. I was hurt at first, but I had to let it go. People that want to help you, will. People that don't, you just have to write it off to ignorance and a low patience level.
Maggie is very high-fuctioning. I would rather have them see and say something about her having autism (big pill to swallow) than to say, "she's just like my son" (when her son is just out of control and all she does is threaten him with empty threats so he is just basically undisciplined where my daughter actually can't help it). KWIM?

oh, one more thing. she has a GREAT adaptive swim teacher that has taught her to swim. she's nearly 7 and barely weighs 40lbs. She's tall and skinny, so floating is difficult for her. Adaptive swim is 1-on-1. It is a higher price than a class (no way she could stay attentive) but lower than private.
