I posted this on the main forum but thought it might be more appropriate here.... Here is an interview on GMA about her new book:
Healing and Preventing Autism

You will have to scroll down on the right side of the link since she was on yesterday.

Not a fan. Won't buy her books. She has made it sound like there's a cure. Soooo not true. Save your money.

Wow, can you explain to me in more detail why you feel the way you do? While I do not think kids are cured as autism never really goes away, some claim to be recovered to some extent. I have had really great results with the GFCF diet that she so strongly advocates. I know some have been turned off by her and I was just curious why. Is it that you find her primarily misleading or is there more to it? Thanks, Tracey

while I realize that one good thing she has done is spread the word about gfcf diet, she makes it sound as if autism can be cured. she actually uses that word. it cannot be. it doesn't work for all kids with autism, my daughter is in that group. i have many friends that it didn't work for either and have some that it has. none of them say it has cured them. it makes them more alert, it decreases the hyperactivity, it allows them to concentrate more, it reduces the explosions they may have etc, but it doesn't cure them.
if it cures them, why didn't it work for my daughter (and others)? the wording she uses gives others the impression (others meaning those without kids with autism) that this IS the way to go...and than we are judged.
I understand that she has success. good for her. GREAT for her son, but just because she can afford to put herself in the spotlot, she needs to watch her words and not give people false hope.
we've worked with homeopathic nutritionists and the medical community for 3 years now and we have not helped our daughter at all. all that we have done is crossed off yet something else that doesn't work. it's a bummer.

Karen I am sorry the diet did not work for your daughter. I did hear that it does not work for about 30% of kids. I also agree with your comment about being cured. I think that is the wrong word to use and can be misleading or give false hope like you said. What she did worked for her son but may not work for every child. I am sorry you have felt judged as well. Autism is hard enough and judgement on top of it is even harder. Each family has to do what is right for them. The diet and any other biomedical intervention or therapy may or may not be the way to go as each child is individual and has their own unique needs. I wish you the best of luck with your daughter and finding what works best for your family whatever that may be. I think one of the most important things we can do as moms is to support one another and be non-judgemental as we walk this road together. Blessings, Tracey
