#4189, "Selective Mutism...not autism"

Anyone heard of Selective Mutism? It appears my daughter is no longer considered autistic but has Selective Mutism (SM) instead.

She has an allergy to gluten and since her diet change she has lost ALL of her autistic characteristics. The only issues left are her social skills. She freezes up in social settings (like pre-school).

She is VERY SHY. I have learned that SM means high, HIGH social anxiety. She is comfortable at home and will talk up a storm but in pre-school she will not talk (she will now answer direct questions at all). If she does talk she whispers.

It seems a lot of kids (mainly girls) get misdiagnosed with autism when they actually have SM. I am trying to find another triplet Mom who has the same issue as I do. I wonder if she should be put in the same classroom as her siblings once she is in Kindergarten...or divide them (as most people suggest to me).

Because of her anxiety I think I want her with her siblings. It helps calm her down.

Just curious if anyone knows of SM? I wrote about her story on my blog: http://friendinreach.blogspot.com/2009/01/selective-mutism-heard-of-it.html.

Thanks!

Alicia

Sounds like my Kalie Rose, she is very shy as well as a result we are leaning toward keeping them in the same room for kindergarten as a result. They recently attended safety camp, for the first week she was in the same classroom but different table than her boys she did not say a word for the entire four hours she was there. Week two put her with her boys and she talked more, not much but she did talk some.

my suggestion is to leave them together till she is comfortable being away from them
