How long before you noticed results? My son was diagnosed on April 2nd and we have been on the diet since April 4th (I knew how to put it in place because my sister is a Chiropractor and actually going to the seminars to become a DAN! Doc too, she already works with a lot of people with food sensitivities). So I've been as strict on it as I possibly can but as you all know with triplets, they share each other's things so occassionally he may have stolen a sip of their milk. That's about it though, I can't think of any other time he would have strayed from the diet. I check all the supplements, drinks, toothpaste etc... I'd say he's actually regressed slightly which I read is sometimes normal. Anyone else experience later results from GFCF? I'm planning on keeping him on it at least until our visit with the DAN! Doctor in late June (man what a wait to see these people).

Also, anyone else in Illinois have any info. on DAN! Doctors that they wouldn't mind sharing with me? I would appreciate it.

And if anyone wouldn't mind sharing their ABA stories I would love to hear how your children have done with their programs. We are starting my son at the beginning of June (just finished assembling our team) and we are starting with about 25 hours. He will be 3 at the end of June and we are hoping we can make great strides before the school year so he hopefully can go to the districts Special Ed Preschool.

Thanks ladies, you are always a wealth of info. and I so appreciate being a part of such a tremendous group.

Hi
ur trio are same age as mine, both my sons have been dx with PDD_nos when 17 mths old and got ABA(25 hrs) from 22 mths with OT and ST later.......we have seen a huge huge progress in them, infact one of them will be off the label & be considered speech delay....I really donno what accounted for the huge improvement wherther ABA or just with time.

now we are struggling with the school district to get services.

Regarding GFCF diet i have nothing much to say since we are not into it.

email /pm me if u have more questions.would like to share views and info since our kids are of same age

love to ur kids

Jennifer
We have had great results with GFCF. We took out soy as well since the proteins are similar to gluten and casein. I have heard of kids having some regression at first. I would give it at least 3 months. I was told it can take as long as 6 months to a year for gluten to get out of the system though. We also had IgG allergy testing done and took out egg. We took out nitrates in meats, High fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors too.
We have not done ABA therapy.
On a different note, I have been reading a lot about HCHouston Homeopathy. It sound really promising, lots of recovery stories. So far I have read nothing negative about it and it seems really safe. I have requested a packet. Might be worth looking into.

Best of luck to you and your son.

Thank you both for responding, I really appreciate your time and the information.

Autism One is here this week so I'm really looking forward to attending that. Also, the Homeopathy Center of Houston has a booth so it will be great to check them out, thanks for that tip!!!

Good luck to both of you as well!

It was pretty quick for Ryan. I dove in head 1st and went for it, we do cheat here and there but we are pretty strict. I think for my kiddo the diet worked fast because he is highly sensitive to food, he has had food allergies since he was on baby food and the rice in the btl, he is allergic to preservatives in food.

Ryan has made great strides since we were diagnosed, change in diet, play therapy, an awesome behaviorist and our regular therapy. This morning my DD was crying for her puppy, Ryan went over to the other sofa and picked it up and handed it to her, she said "Thanks" and he said " Wecome", I scooped him and up, twirled him around and started to cry, I am crying now, it was a lovely moment.

hi. good for you for doing the diet. here's the thing though, every little slip of milk means you just went back to square one. so your child has only been on the diet since the last slip-up, not since april 4. gluten takes 6 weeks to leave the body, casein 2-4 weeks. So you shouldnt see real results until then, and for us that started it and it began to build. Are you also doign probiotics?

you definitely have to be a nazi about the diet. what are you giving instead of milk? I HIGHLY recommend that you put all 3 on the diet. only 2 of ours have autism but number 3 has asthma and allergies and has GREATLY benefited from diet and supplements as well. Plus, all 3 on the diet is the only way you can avoid cross contamination and slip ups.

good luck

I wanted to add that I also have all 3 of my kids on the GFCF diet. I had planned to just do it for one dd but all 3 are better from it. Reflux is gone for one dd and mood swings are improved for the other dd. Dark circles under the eyes are gone. It is easier that way for meal planning and keeping everything in the kitchen safe for them to have too. I am also gluten free since I came up positive with testing and feel great!

More great info, thanks!

I pretty much have all 3 on it. I am thinking of switching all 3 to the rice milk to avoid slip ups, it tastes pretty good and they don't LOVE milk anyway. Our whole family is pretty much eating GFCF now, nobody really seems to mind. I thought cutting out cheese would just kill all of us but no one has asked for it at all!

Some brands of rice milk may contain gluten so you have to really watch, we use almond milk and it works great for cooking. It is a little on the sweeter though so I buy the unsweetened version.

Good luck! We started on the diet with my oldest dd 6 years ago now and have slowly added back in gluten but I think will stay CF forever. She is old enough to tell me how much better she feels without dairy and I don't think she will ever want to go back. We also do Houston Enzymes for questionable food when eating out or at gatherings. They are a lifesaver!

In Illinois, Dr. Usman is supposed to be the best. She's in Naperville. We were on the waiting list (one year) and when our time came up, we decided not to go the biomed route. However, that said, we did go to Dr. Hicks in Wisconsin (we live in Illinios). He was good and I would totally recommend him. We didn't stick with it though.

If you don't mind, where in Illinois are you? We are in Elgin.

ETA: ABA is what we considered to be the turning point for our son in terms of language and learning. You will not be disappointed. It will be hard at first as most of the kids don't want to do it, but stick with it and you'll be amazed at the progress! Good luck!
