#4255, "Anna still in a crib!"

My super sweet daughter Anna (who turns 6 in September & for those who don't know has down syndrome.) She's still small, 33 lbs, and STILL is sleeping in a crib.

We got her a toddler bed last year for her birthday but it didn't work out (she got up and left her room --v. dangerous for her-no saftey awareness) and the other time she fell out.

Thinking I should try again, I mean really, are there any other 6 year olds in cribs? Should I just keep the status quo, no problems, she likes her crib, not too big for it, doesn't climb out or anything or should I make the switch?

If it doesn't bother her, she is the right size for the bed, it's not killing your back to place her in there, and she is safe... I'd probably leave well enough alone.

Another option is to put a gate on the door of her bedroom to keep her safe.

Mine are not as old as yours, they are nearly 3 years old and one of mine has Down syndrome as well. I am leaving them in the cribs as long as possible. And I do mean that! If they are 6 and doing fine, that would be ok with me.

Thanks Sheila! You know, around birthday time is when the subject comes back up (at least for me) and Anna will turn 6 next month. She is doin great in her crib and loves it. Definitely fits in there well and she is safe. So I guess I just needed some reassurance!

I agree...if it still works don't change it. Now, if her feet start sticking out the other end of the crib it might be time to reconsider a big girl bed. hehe

I would have to agree with pp...if it is what she likes, and it works for both of you, I would leave her in there until you feel that she needs to come out of the crib, regardless to what people think is "normal". I'm a firm believer that every child is different, and you have to do what works for them, and you of course.

Hi Jane,
My son Henry is a bit older than Anna-he will be 7 in January and he has DS too. He's been in a twin bed since he was about 3 yrs old. For awhile it was a mattress on the floor. Just this year, I got brave enough to put up the bunk beds for my boys. They had been sleeping in bunks at their father's house for the past 2 yrs anyway. I used to put pillows on the floor next to the bed too for Henry. As of July,he's been on the TOP bunk, much to big brother's chagrin!
I shut my boys' door at night. If they are really acting up I lock it from the outside. I know it sounds bad but I unlock it once they go to sleep.

If Anna is happy where she is, I wouldn't mess with it. Or you could try a twin bed- it would give her plenty of room and she may be less likely to fall out of it.
