#4286, "IEP"

My BBG are 3 yrs now & one of them has IEP bcoz of his speech delays & sensory issues (his PDD-NOS dx is labelled off ) but the other one wth the dx PDD-NOS has been denied any services stating he falls below the requirements to qualify for IEP...I got them evaluated recent from outside & they suggest possible borderline PDD-nos or Aspergers .(they already had been dx PDD-nos at age 20 mths & got good services from EI)

I have not signed the IEP yet but strongly feels he needs another evaluation (his visual stimming & sensivity to certain sounds(like singing "happy birthday" he gets scared wth the song,he'll keep his eyes shut so all these worries me ) but the sch pyschologst wo'nt do any further eval. we are in CA.

They want me to sign the IEP so that they can close the file. At this point what should I do??

I bet some of you has been in my position so what should i do now??? I do not agree wth their denying services at this point.

any info suggestions will be very appreciated.
thanks

You can refuse to sign IEP, if their is one, or reject it IN PART due to the omission of services you feel are reasonable and necessary. If you had an outside evaluation done, did they give you any reccomendations??? I have 2 of my 3 lovelies with PDD-NOS, very high functioning due to good EI support. They will be 6 in a few weeks and are still recieving some support at school....since they need help to Initiate conversation AND sustain a converstion with age appropriate peers. My boys get speech therapy 2x/week....once as pull out services in small group to work on phonics ( they were speech delayed at first) and the 2nd visit for in the class to help with initiation of proper converstion skills with classmates!!
Good luck!
Amy

P.S.
You can also request a Sensory Eval by Occupational therapy to see how much his sensory "issues" for lack of a better word interfere with his ability to access the curriculm with his classmates. An OT should do the eval,.....not a school psychologist!!

I do believe this is true. You do need an IEP to get an OT eval, as that is part of the services on an IEP. It is the Psych, Speech, and Physical evals that would be necessary for the IEP, then from there you would need a OT eval to coincide with a goal in the IEP.

However, you can request an outside eval from another psychologist. The "rules" in CA have changed due to budget cuts, unfortunately. Many of the chilren who would have qualified previously, no longer due. But I would still get the outside psych eval. Just make sure you inform that you are doing so. And do not sign the IEP until it is done.

Good luck,
