#4288, "SSI Question for high-functioning autism"

I was told at one point I would qualify for SSI for my older son who is 7 who has high-functioning autism. I never qualified due to my income, however, now with triplets and me not working I wondered if I would still qualify. He is in a regular classroom but has a one-on-one assistant. What are the criteria they use to determine SSI eligibility?

Thanks,

Jennifer

I don't know what the qualifiers are regarding autism, but I do know with ANY medical conditions- the first time you are ALWAYS denied- period. This coming directly from a department director that a friend of mine works with now (she used to be an SSI director). I know my son qualifies medically even have the qualifying code directly from their handbook but many people have told me he doesn't qualify so ??? I don't think any diagnosis automatically (on the 2nd 3rd or 4th try that is) qualifies you either. Very frustrating system.

Unless the rules have changed I think annual take home pay has to be under $60,000.

annual take home pay depends on number in family.

My older son got approved first time applying. I think it seriously depends on what worker happens to get your file.

The sooner you apply the better. It takes forever for SSA to make a decision.

Check the website for the eligibility. I dont' recall it offhand. But you know what, they deny a lot. They denied my DD after she had been on it for 5 years. I took her to the hearing, without her meds and let her disrupt it so they would see for themselves what Apsergers syndrome and CP looks like in a child all at once! LOL She's almost 10 now and still on SSI.
