#4341, "Hyperlexia anyone"

hi everyone: I need some information as some of you know my ds jake was diagnosed with autism at 18 months (7 different drs with 7 different types but all autism! 6 months ago we took him for a check up with a developmental neurologst. We as well as his teachers were amazed at how he could just read, do math add, substract and so on. We were then told by the Doctor that she believed Jake was misdiagnosed and that she believed he had hyperlexia and that she was going to put a team together and call us for a study on him. Well that never happened. We call and call and noone seems to even know what the heck we are talking about. In the meantime he is in kindergarden with 1st and 2nd graders but doing 2nd graders work (must say the teacher is quite pushy ANNOYING at times) I don't know if this is good or not I feel that he is overwhelmed and I make it a pt to give him free playtime but he is always worried about his school work. Anyways just want to know if anyone has any advise, we have an appt next Tuesday and am not sure what to expect anymore.

Thanks for your help Ivyhttp://daisypath.com/pic/071025/j9UX.jpg

Yes!! My kids are 7 now. My son started to read shortly after he turned 2. A lot of people believe that hyperlexia and autism go hand-in-hand. That has not been our experience, my son is 7 and is not on the spectrum. He had an IEP through preschool because he was "at-risk", but his IEP was dropped before he went to kindergarten and has had no problems. He finds school very easy, but we have not advanced him.

It sounds like you are saying that the school is pushing him too hard. My opinion is that this is not the right direction for kids with hyperlexia, or aspergers or any of the spectrum disorders. Our approach was to really focused on social skills, and communications skills, and other things that don't typically come easy for these really smart kids. Does your son have an IEP? How is he doing with social and communication skills?

I know that I posted several times about hyperlexia several years ago. I bet if you search "hyperlexia" here, you will find my posts. If not, let me know and I'll find them for you. I also used to participate in a message board for parents with hyperlexic kids. I haven't been on it in years, but if you google it, you will probably find something. I'm also happy to share anything about our experience. Let me know what you are looking for.
