#4378, "RE: regular preschool & also integrated class"

My Noah has Cerebral Palsy. He did a private specialized program for his years of preschool while his sisters went to preschool.
However when he started kindergarten he did attend both kindergarten with his sisters and the resource room. He went to kindergarten every afternoon and 2 or 3 (can't remember anymore) mornings per week he also went to the resource room.
It was a great system for him and he did very well. Transporting kids back and forth -- well that wasn't so much fun but such is the life of a mom of triplets!

What is your reason for wanting to do both for him? So that he is with his siblings? Or is there something that the private preschool would offer that he won't get in the public one?
I have a 5-year-old that has been "diagnosed" by one neurologist as "immature and just give him some time" and by another as "mild pdd-nos."
Whichever is right, I can tell you that our public preschool through the district was just awesome! Particularly if your concerns are related to social skills, using your words, and giving him strategies to identify and help with arousal levels....all of that is was integrated into our district preschool for ALL the kids.
And his transition into kindergarten was probably a bit easier because the early childhood program staff had a good handle on his strengths and weaknesses to help us write the IEP for kinder.
I have to tell you...he has made leaps and bounds of progress this year. Whereas he barely said a word in class for preschool, he now expresses himself much better. We still have attention issues, but he is not at all academically behind, so that is great. But all of a sudden, he has vastly improved his story/reading comprehension, his understanding of time concepts, and low and behold is actually playing interactively with kids out on the playground! (Not interacting with schoolmates too much inside classroom yet, but I will take what I can get). And this year he even has a special buddy (a girl no less!) that he has identified as his friend, which is huge.
So now I am wondering if the first neuro was right and that he is immature, rather than being truly PDD-NOS. BBB born 7/26/04 at 35 weeks
