#4403, "infertility drugs & ASD"

I saw this article today, saying that women who took drugs for infertility were twice as likely to have a child with ASD. I have always wondered about this, as I took Clomid to get pregnant with my trio.....:0(

This is very interesting.... I hope more research is done in this area. Two of my triplets have ASD and I have often thought that infertility drugs and IVF probably played a role.

Hi,

My husband saw an article that linked turb sp? (anti-contraction med) to autism. I took that with both pregnancies. My 2 year old is developing normally, but I didn't have nearly the number of contractions that I did with the triplets.

All three triplets are on the spectrum to varying degrees. I've also heard there's a genetic component too which I believe. My dad and brother are definitely on the spectrum, but have never been diagnosed.

I have 5 children

B age 16 asbergers
G age 14 typical
BBB age 5 one with severe autism

I deliverd my first child at age 27, 2nd at age 29 , triplets at age 38.

No fertility drugs for any of my kids, triplets were spontaneous and an unplanned pregnancy. I don't think there is anything to the theory that fertility drugs affect the increase in autism. The only similarities with my first and last pregnancies (the ones that resulted in children with an ASD) is that I took pain meds during the pregnancies. other than that I find nother else similar. i have no idea. i hope they figure it out soon. My daughter is scared to death to someday have kids.

I have wondered that as well over the years. I did ivf and injected myseflt with so many shots. I have now wondered if I was shooting myself up with mercurey too? 1 of my triplets is on the spectrum and then I got preg naturally whe my trio were 6 months old and he has autisma nd is very affected by it. Please pass on any info on this you may find. I have tried to look it up her and there but never find much

Julie

We see a developmental neurologist for one of my trio who is suspected of being in the spectrum. During our first visit he said ART babies have a higher incidence of autism. This was over a year ago.

Last month, I took my oldest to a pediatric neurologist and asked him to clarify what doctor A said as these two doctors are colleagues. He mentioned they have been trying to conduct a study linking fertility treatments with autism, specifically ART. He says nothing is conclusive but there is enough link to definitely warrant more investigation.

I don't know. I did all the drugs to get pregnant and IVF to get my trio and none of them have ASD. I agree with a PP that a lof of it has to do with genetics. Crazy things happen when we are being formed. Genetics fascinate me but I am not an expert at all.

We took my son to his developmental pediatrician for a routine visit a few weeks back. We talked about this subject and he said there is definitely an increased risk of ASD for IVF babies. If I remember correctly, he said 15 times greater risk....
