#4405, "pdd-nos kids as they grow up...."

Both DS dx with pdd-nos at age 16 mths, had intensive early intervention (25hrs ABA/wk OT & ST) had huge improvements by age 3...Only one has IEP due to delayed speech(attends integrated preschool -head start while other was denied IEP) .

they all go to preschool (head start) & has no major issues .

I took the one(my son with NO IEP) for their age 4 yr check up at the ASD center, the pysch did acknowledge his improvement(all age appropriate) except the social skills which he still lacks.

they did mention that around age 10 yrs & up he might have a difficult time due to anxiety/depression & then will need school support......

I was wondering if moms can share their experiences on this, does it get better or new problems do come up???...i know that no one knows whats the future holds but knowing what bad or good might happen can always help.

thanks for the support.

I think you will see continued improvement as they grow. I have heard the adolescent years can be tough with ASD kids so just a heads up. Also, my trio is repeating kindergarten and they need it for maturity and academics although they are not too terribly behind. They are following their own learning curve so I am not to worried about them being old for their grade as long as they contine to progress and no true learning disabilities have been noted so far. Speech is also that way, just a bit behind with some sounds. Thanks to some posters here, I quit focusing on their birthday and just focus on development which is coming, just at a slower rate than their peers. I am just really proud of them and the progess they have made considering prematurity and ASD.

My DD with ASD is now 10 1/2 and she's going into 5th grade. Anxiety and social issues have been a challenge for her since kindergarten. While she has improved in some ways, in others ( like the anxiety) she has gotten worse. She has social skills training at school for the past 2 years now. I also have her in Girl Scouts with her sister, to help with the social skills development. Stay on top of it. Don't wait until it's a major crisis or a big deal to your child. Your DS could probably get social skills training thru the school district or thru private therapy.
