#4422, "2 1/2 year old son suddenly showing signs of Autism?"

Hi Ladies,
I have been a complete wreck the last few days regarding my son Brady. Here's the story: all 3 have been receiving EI services since they were 8 months old. Moved to Denver 10 months ago, continued to get them here. A few months ago, EI cut services because all 3 were reaching all milestones, saying 2-3 word phrases, etc.
Within the last few weeks, my son Brady has regressed with language and speech. Doing more babbling but still able to say some words: juice, please, etc. But he seems like he's in his own world, a lot of times won't answer to his name, and prefers to play alone a lot of the time. He has always been a very picky eater (only eating a total of 8-9 foods) His siblings(GB)always play together, rarely want to play with him and I'm sure he feels left out. But, Brady is the most loving and affectionate out of them all, laughs all the time, loves the park, swimming, etc. His therapists think it may be some kind of auditory sensory issue. I'm freaking out that it could be autism. I know a lot of you moms on here have experienced this and of course I would do whatever it takes to get him the therapy he needs, but does this sound like it could be autism? It is just a sudden change in behavior.
I do have an appt. Aug.16 to have him evaluated by a dev. ped. and OT. And ET is sending out an OT of thier own in the next couple of weeks. Sorry for the long post, I have been in tears about this.

When my 3 aged out of services, we had a ton of regression with the boys, we had to wait 5mo to get their IEP thru the school district( long story why) but both boys were DX. Now only 1 will continue with the program because the other was missed DX( he had a speech delay) If I were you I would have EI services again for the 1, tell them whats going on and hopefully they will help!

Yuo have the eval in a couple weeks which is great.Once they are 3, you can get them a IEP thru the school district. My best advice is to continue speech with them. Get a homeschool preschool program, that really helped my kids a ton

I under stand where you are coming from. Both our boys may be on the spectrum but they are very very delayed so we really don't know. I noticed a big difference in C after he turned 2. Gradually stopped eating solids, wouldn't eat out of the home, scared of the bath, more head banging. Since we don't really have a clear cut answer and because he can't be diagnosed, he is receiving ABA. B had a change as well. Not as happy to see us. I hope all goes well at your appt. We are still waiting for answers.

He may be experiencing some sensory issues but he may not meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis. This is the case with one of my dds. She had several signs of PDD-NOS (form of autism) but she has never been formally diagnosed. I did go ahead and start a gluten free casein free and soy free diet with her after she began toe walking at 3 years of age. She had always been developmenatlly delayed and seemed in her own world but the toe walking got my attention and I began to look into things more. Well, all I can say is I got my daugher back!! She is doing amazing and catching up with her siblings developmentally. I feel very blessed even though the dietary changes are difficult at times. We also use some basic supplements like cod liver oil, calcium, multi-vitamin, etc. and took out all artificial colors/flavors, HFCS and preservatives from her diet.

We also chose to stop vaccinations.

A great place to start might be Dr. Robert Sears' new book- The Autism Book- What every parent needs to know about early detection, treatment, recovery and prevention.
