#512, "Lung problems"

Our boys were born at 27W2D on 4/24/04. Two of them(Sam and Josh) have been home for four weeks and doing great. Unfortunately, Zack is still in NICU because of lung problems. He has been off of the vent for two weeks, however is still requiring quite a bit of oxygen via the hood. His blood gases were worse this morning than they have been in awhile. The doctors don't seem to know what to tell us other than just wait. Anyone had a similar experience?
Thanks,
SH

Scott,
Our were born at 26 weeks exactly. We lost Eric Jr at 28 days, but Levi came home with no oxygen and no monitor after 92 days, Vivian after 105, but with oxygen and a trach. Your son should need less oxygen as time goes by and his lungs get stronger, just give it time. Vivi was off oxygen about a month after she came home.

Congrats on the birth of your boys. Looks like yopur NICU stay wasn't too bad. About average? Hopefully so, and hopefully the third will be home with you soon.

I just re read your post. I missed that his blood gasses were higher. I remember watching all those numbers daily. One thing to ask, did they squeeze his foot to get the blood to come out for his gasses? If they did, they - Oh man, this is from memory - They pop a cell, I can't remember what it is they are called, but they cause a false reading. I am sure they are checking his every 12-24 hours, and they know about the false readings, but I thought I would share that just in case. I hope his gasses come back down. Give him lots and lots of love, and talk to him, he knows you are there. Good luck.

Scott, my trio was born at 24 weeks 3 days and spent 4 and 5 months in the NICU. Abby came home on oxygen and was on it until she was 16 months old! If the NICU DRs haven't already,I would request a pediatric pulmonologist to come in and consult on your son's case. You will need a FANTASTIC pulmonologist for all your boys once they are home anyway so start getting referrals now. My Daughters are almost 5 and their lungs are doing fantastic! Almost like they were full-term babies. I credit our pulmonologist. He saved their lungs, their lives and the life of one of their little brothers too. :-D
