#516, "Promoting sleep for a special-needs baby"

Has anyone else worried about this? My 15-month-old triplet boys sleep in the same room. Two are "normal preemies" and one has cerebral palsy/brain damage issues. Although our doctors and therapists always tell us - and we truly try - not to treat him differently, I find myself running to him in the middle of the night when he cries. I find myself much more willing to let the other two cry it out for night wakings. He's so much more tenacious when he wakes up and cries at night...that's part of it. It's a combination of wondering how much of his night crying is due to his disability, and whether he'll wake up his brothers. My common-sense side tells me it's not disability related. It's around the same time every night, and it's remedied when I pick him up and move him to his port-a-crib. I think it's more habit than anything.

Any advice? And I'm so glad to find this forum!!

He is probably being so much more tenacious because he is learning that that is what brings Mommy! If you have made sure that he is not sick or needing a diaper change, the best thing you can do is leave him alone. The other kids will learn to sleep through it, or they might pick up on the fact that really persistent crying will bring Mom running, and you certainly don't want that!
