#534, "Cataracts"

Hi there...I finally am getting my daughter home this weekend--she had a g-tube put in ( she has Peirre Robin Sequence) which comes with a cleft palalte and other breathing, eating issues. I thought that would be it..my two girls have cleft paltes--we'll deal with that and that's it. Well....we went to the eye doctor yesterday-for a folllow up ( my little ones are 9 weeks old) 4 days corrected. And my little boy has a cataract. Has anyone had or know anything about that...my doctor said eventually it will be surgery--and he can go blind (without the surgery). I know I should count my blessings and be grateful it is nothing worse but when thay are my little babies--it all seems worse. I guess it is my lack of sleep and overwhelming medical jargon that gets me freaked out.
So if anyone has any info or knows anything about cataracts please let me know. Thank you!!

I don't have any info, but I want to say that I hope surgery goes well...I know how hard it is to see your babies go through all of this stuff. Vivian had Laser Eye Surgery for ROP, and I don't know how different that is from cataract surgery, but she came through it like a champ - and the ROP could have caused blindness also. I hope all three of your kiddos are doing well.

Anne -
My older son had cataract surgery in both his eyes within 6 months of each other at the age of 2. It was a long time ago, but please e-mail me directly at sporush4@aol.com and we'll talk.

I work for a cataract surgeon, although we do not do any pediatric work. Cataract surgery has come a long way and I'm sure he will do fine! It does need to be taken care of while he is still pretty young so the visual pathways can develop. Amblyopia (lazy eye) can happen when something like a cataract prevents that eye from seeing like it should. I'm sure there are issues associated with pediatric eye surgery that I am not familiar with, but surgeons have been dealing with cataracts for a long time and are very good at it!
