Do any of your kiddos get Supplemental Security Income? I have been looking into it online, and maybe i've asked this before...sorry if i have. Is it different in each state? We are in AZ. I'm just looking into it for our son with autism. We could sure use the funds to help with costs of our home program. thanks in advance!!

melissa, thanks for the info. do you have to report to ssi what you use the $$ for? i'm just wondering if it can be retroactive as we are starting to buy a few things to be used only when doing therapy with charles.

They send me an annual form which asks if all the money was spent, if there was any saved, and for what purpose was the money used. One of the boxes you can check is something like "usual daily expenses". That is my favorite! If you have specific medical need expenses, you should look into it further. My state offers money for DMS (durable medical supplies) seperate from SSI. I would be glad to let you pick my brain! Email me a private message if you have specific questions! Hope all goes well!

Hi Meg, I looked into SSI here in AZ awhile ago and discovered that you can't have more than $2000 a month in any income or savings accounts combined. I don't know if this is still a requirement as I haven't looked into it lately. My hab. worker (whom you met) has been working to get her son on SSI for a long time and knows the in's and out's of the system pretty well. If you want, I could ask her if it's all right to give you her e-mail address and you could ask her about the process (she was finally able to get SSI for her son). If you're interested just send me an e-mail and I'll ask her. -Karen

Two of my children get SSI and the amont doesn't change from state to state. It is $564 a month. They uped children to get the same amont as adults in May of 03. It is true that they will reduce the amont if you have over a certian amont in the bank. I have heard ofparents quitting or going part time so thier children will get SSI. But is is a life safer.

My three received SSI benefits due to low birth weight, but since the boys were dx with autism, I've heard from many people who have already been there, done that in our state (Maryland) that they could not qualify due to family income until they turn 18. I actually have been consious of this, moving funds in their 529 plans to their sister's account and on our to-do list is to redo our will to ensure our boys will qualify when they turn 18.

It may vary from state to state but in Georgia if you make too much to qualify for SSI you can apply for the Deeming Waiver. This allows a family who makes too much money to still receive medicaid. You apply through DFACS but must have a denial letter from SSI first.
