#652, "group speech therapy?"

bailey is in special education preschool. he recieves speech therapy 3 times a week. i just found out today that he is grouped with another little girl from his class during his speech therapy session. i would prefer that he have one on one during this time, but am wondering what is typical? do your preschool kids (bailey is 3.5) have group speech sessions in school or do they share?

thanks,

Noah is in kindergarten and receives PT, OT and ST at school (he has Cerebral Palsy). For speech he usually gets to go with a couple other boys from his class that also get ST. He absolutely LOVES it!! His ST will also pull them out alone if there is something that she thinks 1:1 therapy would help.

Hi Julia,
Nobody in any of our preschool classes gets one-to-one speech therapy.

Julia
My one sone while in special Ed preschool got one on one ST. The other son got small group which was one to two kids with him. I think it depends on what the goals are for speech. I personally think individual is much better for mulitples since they get only 1/3 of everything to start with. If you have an IEP you might want to read what they put in there. If they only put the hours then ask for one to one, if they wrote small group then you have call for another meeting. i would also talk to ST and ask what they do in there. What does she do with the child she in not working with?
Good luck!

Hi,

We usually did group speech therapy. Ocassionally we had a few students who due to the severity of their condition would require one to one therapy. I can say that I typically receive much better attention from preschoolers when they are in a group working on a speech activity versus working alone. A good speech pathologist can find a way to incorporate each child's goals while working on a single speech activity.

Additionally, we did most of our work IN the classroom. We were able to facilitate some nice language activities with our typically developing preschoolers and those who needed more intervention. The preschool teacher and aides were also able to observe and receive hands on training on how to carryover the IEP goals in the classroom. So speech wasn't just one on one in a small room...but something that everyone was responsible for at all times. We had much better outcomes using this approach.

One more speech pathologist in the triplet mom bunch. I have experience with adults and children, but when my babies were born had been working in a public school with K-6 kids.

I thought I would be really anal about my babies' verbal development, but have noticed that I don't stress much about that. What about you ladies? Is anyone doing a longitudinal study. LOL

Julia,

As you know, my trips are just a month older than yours, and are still receiving speech therapy. They currently receive two-three hours of therapy a week. Their therapy sessions are labeled "group" due to the fact that they are triplets and receive therapy in the home. When Sierra and Shannon received speech therapy though they always received 1:1 until they were of kindergarten age. Once they were in school they were serviced in a small group.

Julia, mine have all 3 been in speech therapy at the pre-school for almost 2 years now. They each go with another child for their speech session. I fought to try and get them individual therapy, but the best I got was that they were to not go together to speech. When one goes they go with a non-sibbling classmate. If he gets it 3 times a week that is really good. Mine only get it 2 times a week here. Hang in there!
