#1891, "what do you do to prevent headlice?"

my son's class all got the dreaded "happy hunting" letter today from the school nurse. one of their classmates has headlice.

i know you can buy a special shampoo to prevent headlice. do any of you do that, or are there any other effective preventative measures that you use? i have been putting tea tree leaf oil into the kids shampoo, but the store that i bought the oil from went out of business, so i am looking for another cure.

thx!

My sister just went thru this recently. Her daughter got lice from a neighbor's kid. She actually paid a professional to come and rid her daughter of lice becasue her daughter's hair is so long and thick. This woman told my sister Olive Oil kills them. Since they have started school my sister puts olive oil on her hair once a week just as a precaution. You don't need a lot but she leaves it on over night.

The best product I have found is "Nitmix". It is available from England over the internet. (google NITMIX)

It is a blend of esstential oils that actually repell the lice. You can use it initially to get rid of lice then in a light spray on the hair everyday to prevent further infestations.
We had lice 3 years in a row (Sept. not surprisingly) but have been free for 4 years since finding NITMIX.

Good luck.
Let me tell you it is much easier with boys than 3 white blonde girls with long hair.

Hey, Tess!

I suppose everybody else's answer is more in tune with your question. However, my best advice to you is to keep them all home 100% of the time and keep them away from other children.

Of course, your next post will be asking us all how to prevent maternal insanity...

Ta-tah, darling! Good to see you. Hopefully, the population count is down at your house by now...

Just happened to see this question...when we were kids our mom used to shampoo and rinse our hair then drench our heads in vinegar and not rinse. In the rain we smelled like a salad but we didn't get lice again. Our hair was long and super thick after two bouts with lice we tried this and I don't remember having it again.
