My kids had Progress Reports in their backpack today. So like they've been in school a month, twice a week. How much progress could they have made in eight classes?
Two of mine had perfect reports and the third one had a very poor one. She can't write her name. She can't sit still during circle time. She doesn't know how to follow directions. She can't use scissors properly. She can't hold a pencil correctly. She doesn't participate during sing alongs.
I'm just wondering if you guys are getting Progress Reports already, or at all? Michele Sarah, Gregory, Amanda born 1/22/04 at 35w1d

Please! Don't get me started!
They are 4. They are not yet in 'real school." So what if one can't write her name. I'm sure she will be able to do it when she's ready. I'm sorry but I get a little weary of the push for over-achieving toddlers. Can we let them be just be little and learn through their play time, which I did with most of mine (who mostly attended two years of preschool before K) and are now honor roll students from elementary to high school.
When my trio was in pre-k last year, we didn't get a progress report until early January. By then the teacher had pretty much nailed their personalities, had developed a relationship with all of them, and we had a lovely conference that focused on their development. It was fun to hear a third perspective.
I would not put a whole lot of stock in a report issued after four weeks. One of my trio is having a few bumps in the road with 'listening' and sitting still at circle time. His teacher, a highly respected educator who I adore and respect, told me the other day that it was still too early to see if that would really be a problem--that it had only been 25 days and he might still be adjusting. I'm betting it's the same with your DD.
Sorry for the rant. I don't mean to discount your teacher's concerns, but I wouldn't lose sleep over them!
They'll be fine!

The only progress report I got was through my 6th grade neighbor. He told me the teacher said she was having problems with my girls. Hello?!? In what universe is that an acceptable approach to communicating with a parent?
Anyway... it seems like your kids' teacher doesn't want to "teach" them, she just wants to assess them. Loren GGG Jan.2005 @ 28wks

is this the language that they used on the progress report? if so, how negative is that?
our kids progress reports come out in january and june. the skills are divided up into categories (motor, fine, social, pre-reading, writing, bla bla bla) and the teacher puts a tick under one of the following areas: achieved, working on/somtimes, has not started yet.
our kids are virutally the same age and only two can print their name, (one very crudely)! the teachers shouldn't make it seem extraordinary that one of your children hasn't mastered that skill yet. each child develops at their own rate.

It was simple Yes/NO. When you get a whole page of NOs circled, it's very negative!!!!
I like yours much better. That makes you feel like they are heading towards the goal! Michele Sarah, Gregory, Amanda born 1/22/04 at 35w1d

Is this the same teacher that wants them writing in calligraphy and completing algarhythms? If so, well, 'nuff said. She wants kids to be perfect so that she can tell everyone how perfect she is. If they aren't perfect she'll blame the parent.
I'm not getting progress reports, but seriously don't all kids (trips or not) have their own individuality and strengths/weaknesses? The teacher needs to relax.
Your DD is doing fine. She sounds like she is four.

Didn't she tell you last week that all your kids were doing great??? ________________________________________________________________
Mine are in 3 year preschool, so I suppose it's a little different - more play, less academics.
We got a "letter recognition assessment" result form last week. It was attached to a letter that said "dear parents, ... DO NOT WORRY if your child does not know all his letters. We conducted this assessment just to be sure that we were teaching at an appropriate level, and to have something to compare to at the end of the year. Here are some activities that you can do at home if you would like to improve your child's letter recognition skills...."
I also get a daily "behavior log" that has either a smiley face, a checkmark, or a minus sign. If you get a check or a minus, she writes on there what the issue was. "Camille struggled to sit still during circle time today. We will work with her on sitting criss-cross, keeping her hands to herself, and not talking. If you could talk about / review these goals in the car each day on the way to school, we would greatly appreciate it!"

Mine aren't. Of course if there are problems, the teachers will speak to me directly.
They have conferences in November and February.
Is this psycho preschool teacher? Kristen

Ours did an "adjustment to preschool" report in the fall. The real progress reports and conferences were in January when you have to decide what you are going to do next year.
We just got "interims" for my 2nd grader...not sure if we should expect them for the Ks. It was pretty basic talked about what they were working on and if they have achieved the standard or progressing. Had coded symbols for other things like behavior, etc. Really at this time of year, even conferences are more about how the child is acclimating to the classroom, with a touch of academics.
I could go off on the rest of your post, but it seems that standards may be a bit high. MonsterMom6 10 year old ^b^ b twins @ 30w5d (1 survivor) and 8 year old gggg quads @ 32w0d

Ours does "progress reports" 3 times/year.
1) In the first 6 weeks - baseline measurement 2) Sometime around February - to see progress 3) Again in May - to see progress
Ours have 3-4 pages of skills each rated along a scale from 1 to 6. They test and rank the kids on the scale, hoping they are at all 6's before it is time to move on to kindergarten.
So, for us, it is really a sliding scale so no "failures", although I'm kind of assuming if they aren't at all 6's are darn near close by the end of the year, they will either tell me they aren't ready for kindergarten, or more likely suggest they need some support in kindergarten.
Sounds to me like the one just isn't quite as mature as the other two.
For what it's worth NONE of mine can hold scissors properly and only 1 can hold a pencil correctly. They can write their name (if you can decipher what looks like Russian), one can't sit still worth crud unless he is in a lap or a chair, and doesn't follow directions well in the class (although he does great at home), and also does not participate during songs, although he can sing with the best of 'em and can repeat all the school songs -- just not in the classroom, apparently! My dh and I go this Fri. the 7th for parent/teacher conf., so we will see how they are doing. If we don't go we can't pick up their report cards. Whatever, they are prek for crying out loud. I am nervous bc this is our first conf. and really don't know what to expect. Yeah I agree with everyone else they are 4 let them be kids. Our girls have been in the "red zone" so many times already. Have had notes sent home numerous times for not following directions, touching or hugging to many kids, ummm I could go on and on. So I am sure that it will be brought up as well in our meeting. I have gotten to the point where when they get notes sent home for I feel is minor things, anymore I blow it off. I talk it over with my dd but I don't get upset anymore over it.
So relax, I think that the kids are still learning the "rules" basically. And like anything else they are kids, they are 4 not 8 or whatever. KWIM?
