#2103, "How's This For Sucky!! "
Fri Oct-17-08 10:01 AM by Triplethefun04

The boys are in one class and Ryley's in another. I love Ryley's teacher and you know the story with the boys' teacher. The more we progress in to the year, the more I'm not in love with this teacher.

Anyways, they are having their Halloween party on the 31st. Ryley's class has a room mom, treat mom and game mom. Like regular school. I'm one of the treat moms. I'm making those Woman's Day halloween cupcakes, going over the top since I can't be at the party. Anyways, I ASSumed that it was the same for both classes. Ryley's class is dressing up and having a fun day.

I get a note today stating that the boys class will have treat provided, they will not be dressing up and they will be having a fun day, not a scary day. Whatever! They are 3/4 year olds. How scary are their costumes going to be? We are spiderman and superman.

So now I have to break it to the boys that I won't be making their class the cupcakes (which I think I will anyways and act like I didn't realize sending treats home didn't mean cupcakes!) and that they won't be dressing up for their party, when Ryley will be going to school in her costume. How sad is that??

I asked Ryley's teacher if they were dressing up, just to make sure, even though I knew they were. I told her how sad that the boys class won't be dressing up. She gave that look and said she tried to talk to the teacher about it. So she doesn't like the idea either. There is another set of twins that are split and so one of their boys will go to school dressed and the other won't. So it doesn't just affect us.

Next year I am definitely requesting the 3 be in with Ryley's teacher!!

That totally sucks. I would complain and would be really vocal about it. But I'm psychotic like that. I'm sure you are getting the picture about me! I think I might even send them dressed up anyway if I didn't complain and pretend like I didn't know. I have one that's going to be a witch too. In fact, I think I'd dress up as a witch too and yell, "BOO!" at the old beyitchy teacher. I mean, seriously, this woman sounds like someone that just doesn't really want to do her job anymore. Like it's just too hard for her now and she's just getting by. I hate that your boys are stuck with her all year.

What would the teacher do if you let the boys wear a semi-costumish outfit on the same day? Do you think she'd understand or be irked?

It just might send her running for the hills.

I'll be sending a note back asking exactly why they won't be dressing up.

Is this a Christian program or does it have a lot of Christian families? If so, I can understand why they wouldn't allow Satanic costumes (witches, devils, etc.). But as for Spiderman, pumpkins, mice, etc., I really don't get that.

Our preschool sent home a note saying wear costumes, but nothing "scary" was allowed.

Can you speak with the director and tell her that the disparity is going to cause major problems in your house at an age when the kids aren't really old enough to understand? And then ask if your boys can move into Ryley's class?

This is a preschool that is part of the public school system. Ryley's class is doing the whole dress up and treats, etc. Not sure why the boy's teacher isn't doing it. But I'll be sending a note in on Monday to find out exactly her reasonings for this.

That reminds me that I need to send in candy since they, at least Ryley's class, is walking around the school to the support staff to TT. That will REALLY suck if the boys don't get to do that too. But why would they do it without costumes??

The more I'm thinking about it, the more this just doesn't seem fair...

I find this really surprising. In my old district it was all or nothing. Either every teacher in the building has a party or none do. There are way too many siblings in schools for one class to have a party and another to not. I suggest finding out if she is the only teacher not having a party. If so, I would DEFINITELY talk to the principal. Also, get as many parents as you can from her class to complain. She is never going to have as cool a party as the your dd's teacher, but she might have to at least let the kids wear costumes. (Not trying to encourage you to force a teacher into doing something she doesn't want to do, but if everyone else in the school is having a party it is simply not fair to her students that she doesn't want to be bothered, especially for a pre-k class.)

This is fascinating. I mean, one of the play areas in EVERY pre-school class I have ever seen is the "dress-up" and pretend-play area! Costumes and assuming another identity seems like a natural thing for preschoolers (even without the Halloween aspect), and quite frankly, kind of an easy day for the teacher!

My boys are split in preschool this year and even the different sets of little projects are killing me! Everyone wants to do every project - but I can't do everything X3, especially if they only send one set of supplies home!

If they told me 2 boys could wear costumes to school on Halloween and one couldn't, I'd probably opt to keep them home that day and do an activity where all 3 could join in!

Michelle! That's is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!! Dress up SHOULD be a big fun part of preschool. I would just send them in costume and pull the old "They dressed themselves today and I just couldn't get them out of their costume...ESPECIALLY SINCE THEIR SISTER WAS ALLOWED TO WEAR HER COSTUME!!!". Can't wait to hear what she says on Mon.

That's ridiculous. I'd dress the boys up anyway unless it was a school policy against costumes (which obviously there isn't). Either all the teachers should agree to allow costumes or say no costumes. I'd also talk to the principal to try to come up with some uniform policy going forward. Even siblings in different grades would be affected by the teachers arbitrarily deciding if their class can dress up.

Our preschool did not allow dress up for Halloween which seems weird since they play dress up at school (like another poster said). But as long as no one was dressing up, I was ok with it.

Our elementary school also does not allow costumes in school. But they do have a party one night so the kids can go and see their classmates in costume if they choose to.

I wrote the teacher a note. She wrote me back. Her reasoning is that in all her years teaching in our school district, that some kids just don't do well dressing up. So she has decided her class won't dress up.

So in turn, they will not be participating in the trick or treat that the rest of the school will be doing. So Ryley will go to school in her costume and come home with a bag of loot. The boys will have their little party in their classroom and who knows what.

I told the boys today, they were disappointed. I'm gonna try not to make a big deal about it. But I feel so bad for them. I'm still going to make the cupcakes for both classes.

I also asked her about having trouble telling the boys apart. She said it's getting better. I told her that I wanted this first experience to be a fun one for the boys and she said she wanted the same and if there was something she didn't know about, to let her know.

I think it's a big personality conflict. I'll definitely be requesting they stay together next year and go with Ryley's teacher.

Sigh....

Well, at least she knows that you aren't thrilled and are keeping an eye on the situation. Hopefully that will encourage her to step up a little.

I'm really surprised the principal would allow her to make that decision on her own. I imagine some kids don't do well dressed up, but it's one day a year. Suck it up you old meanie pants.

"...some kids just don't do well dressing up." What does that mean? They can't afford costumes or they don't like to dress up?

I'm sure some kids don't do well using the toilet, but that doesn't mean we should all stop for their benefit! lol

Hi
This is my first time responsing to this board. It's nice to see a toddler/pre-school board, and who ever thought of it...brilliant to move it here!

I, too, would be upset about not allowing 2 of my 3 to dress up. I see that you already spoke to the teacher. Any chance you can try again, explaining that your dd is dressing up....Probably won't change her mind but might make her more aware for the future, when she makes a sole decision and does not go with the whole group of teachers, she is leaving some siblings out and that just really isn't fair. I would atleast let her know that her decision affects your sons in a negative way as they have to see their sister dressed up. Maybe it will help her understand???

Sorry you are in this position. Maybe you can let the boys dress up when they get home and do something fun around the house, like a treasure hunt...

The speech based preschool one of my ds attends said no dress up for Halloween. I am fine with that cause my other 2 do not attend the speech based preschool and would see him leave in costume in the morning and they would ask to wear their costume too when they go to their afternoon class and it would be a problem. So for this year, I am fine with that.

OMG... I think she is being ridiculous and horrible! My three are in the same class room for preschool, so we don't have any issues like this, but I'm sure things like this will come up as they get older and are in separate classes. I know I would talk to the Director or principal (since yours is through the school system) and express my thoughts on this. I don't see how classes of the same age can be allowed to do things so differently. I feel bad for your boys, though. I know mine would be disappointed and I probably would consider keeping them home from school that day and do something fun with them!
