#2316, "I have repeaters! Help!!!"

When I ask the girls questions, they repeat it back to me. I can't tell if they actually comprehend what I'm asking!!!

Need examples?

"Are you hungry?"
"I'm hungry?"

"Did you play with blocks?"
"Emma played with blocks."

"What happened?"
"What happened?"

I've been working on getting yes/no answers, and they're smart kids, but I don't think they really understand my questions sometimes. Is anyone else dealing with this??? I've been looking at them collectively instead of as individuals AGAIN and I've missed this somehow...

Loren,

I went through this with my boys. I believe they were about the same age as your girls are now. I was told it is totally normal. Drove me and DH nutso though. I have one who still does it occasionally but we also think he has some degree of Aspergers and this is one of the symptoms. The technical term is Echolalia.

Around 3 years old - both of my boys did this and the ped said it was totally normal. Sometimes they are just buying themselves the time to process the question and form an answer. One of my boys stopped doing it after about 8 months or so. The other one, like I said, has Aspergers and still does it occasionally.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm starting to go through this also. Mine repeat just about everything I say.

But when I'm looking for a yes or no answer, The only answer I get is "no".

DH and I were playing around with Luke, asking him all sorts of questions and it was "no" every time. We even asked him if he wanted anything for Christmas this year, and he said "no".

That is definitely the fallback response around here when they don't know the answer or don't comprehend the answer. Or don't want to answer. I.e. - "who broke that?" will inevitably get the blank stare and repeat back...

Glad to see I'm not the only one!

We had their well-check doctor appointment yesterday. I mentioned it, and at the end of the appointment he said he didn't hear anything that made him worry while they played. In fact, he said he thought they were way ahead of the game academically! That was good news.

Then he told me they would be short. lol
