#2414, "canned tuna fish for the kids- is it safe?"
|
I made my kids tuna fish salad for the first time this week. they loved it. but now I'm wondering whether I should have given it to them at all? or ever again? has anyone done some good research on what the real scoop is? and are there any foods that take metal out of the body?
I've read that chunk light is safer than albacore solid white, and then read some light has the same or more sometimes, depending on whether yellowfin is used. and then read more that says its all a farce and all tuna is safe! my kids are not yet 45lbs- one of the categories for limited tuna intake according to one site.

My kids eat tuna fish once of twice a week. We also eat chunk light, which certainly took some getting used to. But the upside? It's cheaper and lower in mercury! When I researched it (many moons ago), the FDA was saying no more than 6 ounces of tuna per serving. If you added up how much actual tuna, when I split a can four ways, they actually consume, I'm sure it's not more than an ouce.
I am trying like the dickens to get them to really like fish. We eat it at least twice a week. I think the benefits of fish far outweight the risks. All the other countries beat us by miles in their fish consumption. Michele Sarah, Gregory, Amanda born 1/22/04 at 35w1d

It has been on my list of things to wait until their 4ish to start eating. I've made tunafish sandwiches a couple of times lately and they eat it. I have also only just recently offered them shellfish. We eat fish regularly, salmon mostly and they love that.
I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to offering them some things and I tend to wait. Especially if I read conflicting information.
I think if you want to offer it to them and feel comfortable, then go for it. Especially if they aren't allergic to that type of stuff. or at least not at a huge risk to be allergic.

Have you thought about using canned salmon instead of tuna? It tastes almost alike and canned salmon is wild caught so there is no mercury in it supposedly. I have substituted canned salmon for tuna in my recipes and it works well, especially if it's cooked. HTH
