#513, ""Freedom" for Toddler Triplets"

Hi all:
This is my first posting to this board so here it goes. I have BBG triplets who are almost two. One (Evan) is very delayed and cannot walk or talk. The other two are developing "normally". Here is my question - I am discovering that my two mobile ones are much less skilled at things like climbing steps and running without falling than other non-multiples their age. This has me worried, and also Evan's therapists are constantly telling me that my other two should really be doing steps and things like that more. However, I absolutely cannot supervise 3 kids on the loose outside, or climbing steps, or whatever, by myself. Especially because Evan needs complete hands on attention. So they are always in their stroller (if we are out somewhere) or in our VERY baby proof play room. I feel guilty that they are not allowed the freedom that other kids are, and I am worried that this may somehow stunt their development, yet I don't know how to change anything. Even when my husband is home at night we still can't change much because we really need a third person to help since Evan has so many special needs. Any thoughts? thanks so much for any help! -- Abby

Hi Abby,
Mine aren't born yet, so I have no advice. Just wanted to say you are better off making another post in the main forum which is Triplet Connection Multiple Questions. You'll get lots more answers there

I totally understand how hard it is to allow your triplets to run free. I have 2yr old triplets and we have just begun making some huge changes to allow them some catch up time. Most of the areas that they seemed delayed in were unfortunately brought on by us. Sad but true and honestly i have no idea how people get around it. One thing that was suggested to us was to use an aerobics step and allow them to climb on and off to help their stair skills. They really seemed to enjoy this and it has helped them tremendously. The other thing is that at some point you are just going to have to let them go!!!! It's scary and the first couple times will be completely overwhelming but it can be done with two people. My husband is more daring than me and does it on his own. Community centres that have enclosed play areas are great place to start!!! Small parks with toddler play-takes a few terrifying tries but boy does it get easier. Friends/family with enclosed backyards-just to let them race around and get used to receiving direction from you on the sidelines. I understand that having one with special needs is a strain, especially in these situations but your little ones just may surprise you. It gets so much more interesting when they can run and play on their own. Good luck. Terrie
