#516, "Always pushing head back.. should I be concerned?"

I am probably being a paranoid mommy. I had my bbg at 33 weeks and they are now home with me. They actually are 4 weeks old now.

My son (the smallest at birth) always pushes his head back. Sometimes (when he is not crying or upset), he arches his back and his head and legs go back. My other two do this occassionally (most when they are upset), but he seems to do it more often.

Do preemies just do this sometimes??? Can it be that maybe that is the position he was in most of the time in utero???

My daughter used to do this to. Even when holding her and when she wasnt upset. She just used to her head way back. My husband was much more concerned about it than me. I dont know when it stopped exactly but it did and she is healthy, happy, and no delays.

Maybe express your concerns with your ped at their next check up.
Good luck. and Congratulations.

Kim,

Thanks for your response. I wont worry as much then and I will ask the ped. when we go to see him. I guess that everything went so well with my pregnancy and although they were born at 33 weeks they were a good size and very good health, I worry that something is bound to go wrong... I worry too much I guess!!

Wow.. you have many kids!!! BLESS YOU!!! and thanks for your reassurance!!

Mel

One of my twins did it and two of my triplets did. In all cases, it was due to high muscle tone. They received physical therapy through ECI and are fine now. You may want to contact your local ECI (Early Childhood Intervention). They can help you out. It's very important to catch it early and correct it.

Wow.. now I am really worried. I starting looking up high muscle tone online and what mostly came up was websites dealing with cerebral palsy. I mentioned what my son was doing to the ped and she didn't seem concerned. I specifically asked her if there is anything that this should be monitored, and she told me that a lot of babies do this. Were any of your kids diagnosed with CP?
