#966, "Anybody have grunting/squeeking noisy babies?"

I have 5 week old ggg triplets, 32 weekers. They only spent 16 days in the NICU and came home together, very strong and healthy, good weights etc... One of the girls makes the strangest sounds at night and sometimes it keeps us awake. She makes sounds that are like a baby lamb, sometimes sounds like a squirrel chatter and also grunts loudly. I thought that she did this when she had to burp because she has some mild reflux and she makes the noises when she is sleeping or "dreaming" sometimes she is doing the twitching/eye rolling thing at the same time but not always. Oddly enough she is also the one who does not cry, meaning her sisters can whale out loud if they want to and she just gives a squeek even when I know she is upset, like when the wet wipe is cold or something. One of the other girls has started to copy her grunting sounds but does not do the chirpy sounds. It is almost like they are communicating. They are sleeping in the same crib. None of my other kids ever made these strange sounds, maybe the grunting as they stretched or something but nothing like this. It sounds like a barnyard around here. I am not complaining that she doesn't cry but I guess it kinda worries me a little. She is also the slowest eater and still does not nurse well.

I had to laugh when I read your post- my babies are 5 months- 2 months adjusted (28 weekers) and when they first came home my sister remarked that they were the noisiest sleepers she had ever heard. She said the crib sounded like a rainforest (I thought barnyard). We also had one who made lamb sounds! I will tell you that just last night I realized the the grunting and chirping has mostly disappeared, and we rarely hear lamb sounds anymore!

My son did. He was born at 27wks, in Nov. 1999. When i would hold him in the NICU he made these weird noises. The nurses told me they are called "preemie grunts".

So, when he came home in that January of 2000, lets just say my son slept in his vibrating chair grunting, slept in his infant car seat. He also liked being swaddled as tightly possible. All this done while grunting. Patting his bum kind of helped, why
i have no idead but it did.
It took a while to get used to these "preemie grunts", but call me crazy, I missed it when he did grow out of them.

All of my boys did that. They called it preemie grunting. The first day we brought the boys home I decided to use the baby monitor, that only lasted one night because we could clearly hear them.

The funny thing was back when the lights went out and the boys were only 6 weeks old, we took them to my parents house to keep them warm because my parents had a fire going. I slept in the same room as them and I had a hard time sleeping because of the noise! Very funny noises!

This is bringing back good memories. My boys used to do the same thing. Very noisy sleepers, one will do this throat clearing sound when he is upset rather than cry, and his brothers started to copy this sound. When my SILs came to help one day, the three of them were doing it, and they thought it was hilarious. But they did grow out of it, and now they are just loud barbarians.

My triplets (BGG) are 7 months old and it has stopped, but we had a barnyard also! If you can you should record it just to go back and make you giggle to listen to it! Congratulations!

Thank you all for letting me know this is normal! The one that made those noises the most has now figured out how to scream a very high pitched scream and will belt one out the minute she has a dirty diaper or gets hungry. She still does the chirping but not so much when she should be sleeping like before. They are 2 1/2 mos. now and growing so fast.

My little girl is 4 and a half months old and since she was born she coos while she sleeps. Every once in a while my boys will do the same. Because we still sleep in the same room with them we have to keep the TV or music on the drown out the noise.

Hi,

I have 9 month old triplets, two boys and a girl. I went to 36 weeks with mine and they were in scbu for a week, same deal fine weights and healthy coming home but the girl made the madest grunting sounds at night it was like a heaving grunting noise it was so loud it kept us awake. The district nurse heard it and she advised I bring her to my GP, who in turn because she was so young said i had to bring her to hospital, they admitted her because she was so young (they hadnt even heard the grunting) and she was discharged the next day,(after clear xray and blood test) they didnt think it was anything. Then I got second opinion of good doc who said it was reflux and put her on infant gaviscon, it relieved it a bit but not much. Anyway to make a long story short she just grew out of it. She also did not cry, just the grunting and when I look back on it I think it was separation anxiety. Mine also did that chirping that sounded like communicating it used to freak me out a bit. Just in the past month or so they are going from 7 till 7 with the odd wake up for a dody (pacifier). It does get easier.

Best of luck
Paula

All of mine did the noise. We always laughed because they all sounded like a different animal and it did sound like a barnyard!!! I asked the nurses in the NICU and they said it was very normal for premature babies, so that helped us to not worry so much!
