#1040, "My grandads obituary"

My grandfather passed away on saturday night, and his obituary was published today.

In the obituary all of his family was mentioned and in the section of predeceased by, my stillborn daughter was mentioned.

This is so important to me, we lost her at 21 weeks of pregnancy, and many people think because she was not term, she "didn't really count"---but my family printed that she has passed on. I feel that she was important to them as well.

His funeral will be held at the same funeral home as hers was, she is also buried there as well.

I just wanted to share this with those that understand.

God bless your family for understanding and for doing the right thing.

When my mother died, my sisters acted like total creeps and deliberately excluded Carina's photo from the memorial picture display. It really hurt my feelings so badly, and I didn't understand why they needed to do that.

It is good that your daughter was commemorated as someone who was important to your family.

It is better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all. In memory of Carina, who was greatly loved.

Charlene --
I'm sorry for the loss of your grandfather, but I'm so glad that your family is sensitive and intelligent enough to understand your loss and to acknowledge the life of your daughter. I can only hope that my family will ever be so understanding. It is a beautiful remembrance, and I am grateful that you shared this.

I am sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. Your family sounds absolutely lovely - I wish all families were as sensitive to early loss of a child.

Thank you for the support on the loss of my grandad...he has been chronically sick for the past 10 yrs or so, however he truly loved life so it is sad to have him gone.

I found out from my mom that it was my step grandmother that wanted to include Faith in the obit. She is my grandfathers second wife, his first is my grandmother. My stepgrandmother is a very kind person...we aren't close as my grandad and her lived far away while I was growing up. They just moved back in the last few years.

I plan to write her a short note of thanks to let her know how touched I was with her including my daughter, do you all think this would be appropriate?

I think a note of appreciation would be wonderful. How wonderful of her to remember Faith at her time of crisis. My family has never, ever mentioned my son and I can't imagine that it would occur to him to remember him as your step-grandmother remembered your daughter.

I am so sorry about your grandfather's passing, it is so sad to lose anyone, even if they've been ill.

I think she would love to know how she touched you. She may have anguished over whether or not to include Faith. I'm sure she would like to know that she did the right thing. So many people do nothing for fear of offending. She should know how you feel. It will warm her heart.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.

We had a similar experience this past summer. DH's grandfather passed away, and we went home for the funeral. The day of the funeral, we were passing around the newspaper, reading the obituary DH's grandmother had written (actually had been written for a while, and then updated). As it mentioned his entire family, all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all the spouses, it also mentioned Abbey Grace. It, of course, brought me to tears. I wasn't expecting it at all, and it was so nice that she was recognized and remembered. And it warmed my heart to know that she was waiting in heaven for her Great Paw Paw.

So I totally understand how you feel. I hope the funeral goes as well as possible for you.

The same thing happened to me when my Grandfather died. My daughter's name was included. I didn't even think about it and we lived out of town, so I didn't read the paper. Months later my mom sent me the obit that had been laminated and I read it. I cried terribly...but it was a wonderful cry. I just wasn't expecting to see her name in print.
