When my triplets entered preschool, I wrote an article for Twins Magazine about my empty nest. I also remember writing about what I would like to do when the boys were all in elementary school and I think I also mentioned when our nest was really empty after they were off to college. Looking back I think I really had a misconception of what a true empty nest was.

We still have one son living at home and attending a local community college so we really aren't empty nesters yet. Three of the boys do live away at school, though. One is out of state.

I had these grand idea's that we would travel, I would redecorate the house, have all these fabulous luncheons with friends, attend plays, be spontaneous.... I am still waiting for most of these. We have been doing some big remodeling projects inside and outside of the house simply needed because of the wear and tear of raising for active boys. I'm still waiting for the traveling to start. The luncheons would be great if we weren't all working!!!!

All the money I thought we would have extra is still going towards the boys schooling. I just sat down and tallied all the education costs for our taxes and realized where all my income goes.

I do appreciate the quiet times I do have which are definately more than they used to be. My house does stay clean longer than it used to.

I think I remember saying that maybe I would go back to school. Yeah right! With four kids in college that leaves little room for mom to go.

I have started brightening up our house with lighter colored furniture and carpets. I have waited many years to do this. I thought I would have 5-6 years to really enjoy the light colors without too much worry. Then my oldest son became engaged to a young lady who has an almost 3 year old daughter. Out comes the playdough, the spaghetti O's, the crayons and the markers. I have been babysitting quite a bit.

Now I think maybe the empty nest stage will actually start much later in my life than I thought

How do you plan to spend your empty nest years? Especially that first one.

It seems so far away, and who really knows what it will be like, but I guess I really just picture having more time alone with my wonderful husband, night fishing, hiking, things we do now, just more focused on him, staying up late or sleeping in on our own schedule...........but right now, I think I'll enjoy the snow through their eyes, and smile at my dear husband over the tops of their heads!!!

I really want to travel. It's a love both my husband and I shared. We did quite a bit before the boys were born and would love to continue! So many places to see....

Like you, I think we'll be a little short on funds once the boys fly the nest. We'll have 4 in college. I'll be back at work to just pay for that.

But I can dream! Great question, Kathy.

I have a feeling, I'll spend the first year crying. As much as I say I can't wait for that time to come, I truly never want it to get here. My boys are at the stage where they say "I love you mommy" on their own, and they mean it. I wouldn't trade this time for anything.

DH and I have dreams of traveling, of putting that hot tub on the deck and maybe just kicking back and relaxing. But in reality, I can't see either one of us ever slowing down. I can honestly say that I wouldn't mind improving my golf game, and play at least once a week - that would be my idea of heaven.

I really don't think that far ahead too often, I usually just try and make it through another day.

I really love this question, and would love to see what more moms/dads of the older kids have to say.

Uh oh,
I know you had mentioned your son was engaged, but you becoming babysitter for the little one? Wow what a great grandma, well not yet, but soon enough hu?
After all my kids are of age and on their way in their lives, I just hope we will be healthy enough to do the things we want whatever that may be at the time. But I honestly don't know if there is anything more we want than to relocate to Lake Tahoe and build a beatiful home and live happily ever after. The worst part is the only way I see
this dream is with kids in my life, I can just see all the kids and grandkids filling my home for the holidays. I think this multiples thing has taken over and I can't see DH and I alone LOL

I'm not even sure if DH will still be alive! He'll be 67! LOL

Assuming they all leave the nest & go away out of state to college somewhere when they are 18... I'd have to agree with what just was written - SLEEP!

Oh, gosh, I am not even thinking that far in advance, I am too scared to do that. Depending on what happens with DD (Katie-Down syndrome). I think we will move to the northern part of our state on a lake. Now if Katie is going to need the services of a bigger town, we may just end up staying right where we are, which I guess wouldn't be too bad. I am not counting on everyone being out of our "nest", I am not sure that is going to happen here. We shall see.

I'm hoping to have a hot, romantic, rich husband by then! ha ha! Maybe one about 15-20 years younger than me. Just kidding. I haven't dreamt that far ahead yet. I'm still reconstructing the dreams I used to have to accomadate my wonderful children. I want to see the world and take them with me. I want the best of everything for them all. College for all 4, including Henry, and happiness overflowing. I want them to all be close and loving to each other and make a positive difference in our world.
