hello!

The arm is doing better, and Alex is getting use to the idea of a temperory clipped wing. He still has some pain due to the swelling and the restrictive splint, but he says his fingers aren't so numb now.

Actually, I am very pleased at how well he is handling it all. He'll have a cast thru the end of school (mid-June), but at least he'll have the summer without it. Alex constantly is doing handstands and cartwheels, and he is bummed that he can't do them.

Alex is also a spiffy dresser, so he is bummed that he can't look his best (can't get his arm thru some shirt sleeves and the tighter jeans are hard to put on. (Bryce and Calder could not care less what they look like -- much to Alex's disgust!)

Alex also is very independent, so he tries to do as much as he can byhimself (Bryce would be milking an injury for all it is worth!)

Alex got his cast today -- RED!

He'll get it off in 4 weeks and does not have to wear a sling.

The doc shook his finger at dw when she told him he had gotten the spint wet in the pool this week-end (bag split open that we taped around it.) But in my mind it was worth it! Alex really needed to be able to enjoy some of the pool at the motel! Ya gotta take care of the soul as well as the body!

Red! Too cool! I found a 'cast protector' that slipped over the cast to the top part of the arm and formed a seal with the arm. McKayla was able to swim and bathe with no worries. It was definitely worth the $20. Glad he got to do some swimming!

Where did you find the cast-protector?! I'll Google for it right now!

Edited...I found some info on stay dry pump cast protector. It is $35...a bit pricey for our current budget...which won't really improve until after the cast is off and dw returns to work. But it is a possibility.

Vaughn,

I found it at a home-health type store. It was like a long plastic sleeve that you slid on the arm up to the top of the arm. The top of it had a small hole just big enough for the arm to go thru and then at the top it formed around the arm to make a seal. I know that is not explaining it too well, but she never once got her cast wet with it on.

I was surprised at how well JJ handled his broken elbow. I think it was harder on me. I had to bag it all up for baths and such. He did not seem to mind as much as I thought he would.

I wish I would have known about that sleeve to keep water out. I would have bought that. I used tape and trash bags up to his shoulder.

Since your son is older he might actually miss some activities. Have some special things for him to do so that even though he may miss out on swimming, he has something else special to do.

But, if you get the water sleeve thing then he should be able to go swimming and have fun. He might handle it better than you think.
