Doing your taxes today?

Just looked at my W2 -- the university did not withhold anything for Fed or State taxes.

This might be interesting! I'd better get busy instead of trying to delay!

Have a great week-end everyone!

I have had my refund back for weeks and been earning interest on it. The one we owed on came out of my account on Friday.

I hope you come out okay, with the lack of deductions being taken out.

Finished! Only 5 hours!

Hope I did them right. Reading tax codes and instructions was certainly no easier than when I read The Tao of Physics!

Well, there is a distinct advantage of being in the lower income bracket...and that child support received is not considered income. No wonder the the country's and state's balance books are so unbalanced -- I am paying no income taxes. And if I read everything right and put in the right numbers, I'll be getting a sizable chunk from the Fed gov't even without paying anything in. Something called the Earn Income Credit. Crazy. It is now up to some poor clerk to figure out if I did it right!

Of course, I am paying gasoline tax, 9% sales tax, taxes on utilities, property taxes (thru my rent), and all those other hidden taxes, so I am not tax-free. But it is nice that none of my money is going towards $600,000 cruise missles and other major gov't investments in death. Once a hippy, always a hippy! LOL!

Glad to hear you came out okay. It takes the IRS about 3 years to figure it all out, if there is an error. And of course they charge you interest for all of that time.

We never had a problem, but my SIL goofed on my Mom's taxes a few times and that is how long it took to catch it.

We gave up doing our own taxes several years ago. With a small business, 2 employees, home office, and 4 kids, we are at very high risk for an audit. It's worth the peace of mind to have a professional do it.

Funny story about our accountant - I've never met her! She's been doing our taxes for over 10 years. My sister recommended her since her large business used her for years. She's very honest and does not play games. I've talked to her on the phone and we email every quarter. Paperwork is done by mail. But I trust her completely but would walk by her on the street. Strange, I've never met her!

I hate April 15th. It's not only tax day for the previous year, it's quarterly tax time, too!

I have not done my own taxes for a couple decades, so it was an interesting learning experience, to say the least...and a bit more than the short form I use to use!

I have a photography business in addition to my day job. So I did have to deal with Schedule C and the self-employment form. Not too bad. I only deducted mileage and some per diem to keep that part simple -- instead of going through all my receipts for all the things I bought to make the photographs I sold and workshops I gave.

So while Saturday was a bit of waste -- stuck in front of the computer, downloading forms, instructions, filling out forms, doing the math and all that fun stuff -- Sunday I went up the coast and visited with a friend (and helped on a project next door at his daughter's home), then spent some time on the beach (in a light rain and a low tide...very nice) on the way home.

So quite the mixture on the weekend!
