#366, "homework"
|
I have a question concerning the amount of homework given. My trio is now in grade 2 and each comes home with about 20-30 minutes of homework/night (home reading/prepare for spelling test at the end of week/and usually a math assignment). I do find it difficult to get each one completed, because I help them with their homework separtely. They are in separate classrooms and often have different assignments. With each passing month, I find it more and more difficult to effectively spend the necessary time with each and to complete the work. How does everyone else manage? ...and at what age do children start to become more independent and need less help from Mom. I know it sounds awful, but all I keep doing is counting down the months till the summer break!!

Hi Lisa,
I had exactly the same problem with my trio. The homework was really getting me down, I honestly couldn't cope! In the end I asked for a meeting with the head teacher, we came up with an easier homework plan. Homereaders were done with all three at one time. Each child read a page at a time and we did three books one after the other. Maths was also done together as a team, again with more than one project. Because we were doing together it was a lot easier and surprisingly quicker. Its worth arranging a meeting and setting the same homework for all three. The teachers just don't understand do they? Even though yours are in different classes I'm sure they could come to some sort of arrangement. My trio are a few months older than yours and over the last few months they have turned a corner and are now doing a fair bit of their homework on their own now, I mostly just watch over their shoulders and answer questions and give a little bit of help now and again. It really is surprising how fast they learn!
I'm dreading the day when I can't make head nor tail of what their homework is about!
Don't worry graduation is only a few years away!!!!

I feel your pain. When all three are clamoring for my help, I feel like my head is going to explode. Throw in a 5th grader and things can get hectic.
My boys are in three different classes and get three different sets of homework each week. I have them start doing the homework by themselves. I supervise the writing assignments (they are only in 1st grade). Writing a paragraph is a big deal to a 7 year old! Most of the time, they just need to be shown what to do and then they do it.
I swear I spend more time with my 5th grader showing him how to study. Each year, the curriculum gets so much harder and grades count toward honor roll now. Helping him prepare study guides and big projects still require mom's guidance. He does a lot by himself but still needs help quizzing for tests and staying organized.
In 2nd grade, my boys will still be in separate classes. However, I think all the teachers give out the same homework package. Right now, I have one kid with a little bit of homework, one with a medium load of homework, and one with a huge load of homework. And this is just 1st grade.
My sympathies.... June is almost here!

Lisa,
I feel your pain...
We have Shannon in fifth grade with a lot of homework each night. However, we are lucky with her because she just comes home and does it. We do check it at night but other than that she is on her own for the most part. I have to add that while my triplets aren't in school yet, we had the chaos of a ridiculous amount of homework when Shannon was younger in addition to infant triplets and a 2 year old- that was so not fun.
Trevor is in third grade and gets an appropriate amount of homework (IMO) and usually gets it done independently. Again, we look it over at night and that's about it unless he has to study for a test or something.
Sierra is in kindergarten and really doesn't get much homework at all other than reading, which she is very good at, so that's not an issue with her.
I am NOT looking forward to the trips all in fourth grade...as that is "THE YEAR" here...lots of mandated state testing, lots of homework, lots of pressure, etc...
Hang in there, with guidance, time, practice, and confidence, they will grow more independent and life will get easier...

A rule of thumb for teachers is 10 minutes per grade level, meaning 10 minutes in first grade, 20 minutes in second, 30 minutes in third, etc. (I am a former teacher Jennifer, SAHM to ggg, 28mths
