#890, "bedroom themes"

I am about to seperate my kiddos into 2 bedrooms. I painted one room this week (for Madison) light purple, and have bought disney princess stick ons and will be stenciling some flowers, etc on the wall. What I need help, ideas on, is the boys room. What did you do for boys that isnt too babyish and will last 4-5 years? I dont want to do racing, (older son had that when he was little), so I have thought about sport themes. Any other info will be greatly appreciated!

how about space and planets. You can do outdoors like camping bugs and fishing. Sports is a safe bet. What do the they like to do. How about cowboys. Look on Company kids co. They have great bedding we bought for our boys, so it gives you ideas for decorating as well.
Have fun!

We didn't have a theme our son used for a long time but did his room in a very "expandable" way so we could re-decorate easily.

When he was 15 mos. (and we moved into our present house) we wallpapered the bottom half of his room with primary stripes on a white background. I made plain blue curtains our of sheets for the windows (amazing how hard it was to find plain curtains). We added a train border, a transportation bedspread, pillow, and some extras from Lillian Vernon.

At 5 he was all about cowboys so we changed the border to cowboys, used jute rope for curtain tiebacks, threw bandanas over the curtains rods, used an old Mexican blanket for a bedspread, and found a set of cow horns my husband had gotten in Mexico long before we married.

Now at 9 Frankie is ALL SPORTS! We replaced the border again with a sports theme (found at the dollar store), bought sports sheets- used the fitted one for the bottom and sewed the tops sheets to make a duvet for our old feather blanket, pinned pendents to the curtain tops and every issue of Sports Illistrated for kids has posters that go on his walls, doors etc.

I guess my point is if you have a basic design to the room you can accent with lots of things you find around and not have to worry about growing out of a room.

Good luck.

Sailboats; red, white, and blue (maybe patriotic); state flag (an easy one for those of us in Texas), outdoors (camping, fishing, etc.); trains; Batman/Superman superheroes/comic books...

I can't wait to see the other suggestions. DH is ready for our kids to have real rooms instead of all bunking together.

My baby has a jungle theme...not a babyish jungle, more like an Africa thing. It is so much fun to find accessories for! I think it will be good for years.

I am in the middle of doing the older boys' (5 yrs old) in a Space theme. I got great material and am making tents for the bunk beds and valances for the windows. Rocket accessories and glow-in-the-dark stars for the ceiling. I hope it too will go for a few years. As they get older, I figured the cartoon space ships can be replaced with the space shuttle and ,more realistic things.

We have done a sports theme in both of our boys' rooms too. We did a generic theme, not one from a particular sport or team. They both have hockey, football, basketball, baseball and soccer I believe. One set is from JcPenney, the other from Sears, but other catalogs and stores carry them too. We did the rooms when they were each about 3 yrs old. I agree, I didn't want a room they'd outgrow too soon. Our older son hasn't complained about needing a change yet, so hopefully it will last a while longer. Maybe you can narrow it down to 2 or 3 that you like and let him make the final choice. I like some of the other members' ideas too - this is a great place for ideas! Let us know, or post a pic when you're done.

How about construction vehicles? My girlfriend did her sons that way and it's really cute and I think it's a theme that could last for a while.

My dh loves to fly small planes so we decorated our son's room with aircraft. I painted the room blue and then had a muralist paint airplanes from vintage to modern military. Its wonderful and I hope he likes it for awhile.
