We are still bumper free but the girls are getting more mobile (8 months actual, 5 months adjusted) and scooting to the sides of the crib and I have caught them with their little feet poking through the rails.

Do you use bumpers in your crib? I bought the breathable bumpers but they offer no padding so I took them back, I've seen thin bumpers and now that their beds are lowered they may work. What do you use? Thanks!

I took the bumpers out of the crib around the same age yours are because I was worried they would scoot under them and roll, thereby getting their necks trapped. Also, once they start pulling up, they will stand on the bumper and it can give them a boost to get a leg up and over the edge of the crib.

I wouldn't bother with the bumpers. Mine are now nearly 3 and a half years old, and they still end up with feet sticking out of the rails.

I use the bumpers, and my girls just turned 1 (10 months adjusted). I've used them since the beginning. First they of course weren't mobile and then they'd scoot their way to the crib and I didn't want them bumping their heads. One is now standing, and we lowered the mattress, so even if she steps on it it's not going to help her get out. Sometimes I do find them smooshed against the side of the crib with their face against it but. . .they also sometimes sleep on their hands with their noses smooshed into the mattress, so I figure if they're smart enough to not suffocate that way, they're not going to suffocate with their head against a bumper.

I use the breathable bumpers in all 3 of their cribs. They have a LITTLE bit of padding but it has kept them all contained in their cribs. With my older dd we had a traditional padded bumper and once she started standing up she would try to step up on it and it tore the ties. One con for the traditional bumpers is they are so bulky you have to take them off just to change the crib sheet and the breathable ones you don't because they are thin.

I have never used bumpers. Mine would likely try to use them as leverage when standing, so I'm glad we don't have them. We definitely did have some times where limbs got stuck, but they figured it out eventually.

I used them for a while, but it was soo darn aggravating to change the sheets that I got rid of them prob around 6-8 months. I cant remember exactly. My babies slept in a pack n play in the living room with me for the first 4 months, so they were in the crib for about 2-4 months until I absolutely had enough of the bumpers and took them out. There were always feet poking through the rails but it didnt seem to bother them.

That's a good point. I think we'll skip the bumpers.

If you use a bumper, buy "the ultimate crib sheet". even if you don't use a bumper, it makes changing sheets soooooo easy...esp in middle of night

I use breathable bumpers. My kids are all over the crib and are always smashing their faces into the side of the crib, so breathable works for us.

I am a healthcare worker and I have worked on several SIDS babies, so I am a little biased.
I use the breathable bumpers. I tried using nothing and I was doing alot of the middle of the night runs to get arms and legs out of the rails. They would wake several times throughout the night crying. Im not really worried about the bumps on the head. They do worse on the floor and with toys!!!!
