#1078, "Baby v. Table Foods"

I am stupid, I admit it. I don't understand when people on the main board talk about feeding their kids baby food versus table food. Part of the problem, I think, is that I make the girls' food, so I have no idea what the difference is between stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3.

Does baby food mean it's just super pureed? Does table food mean I just give the girls whatever we're eating for dinner? Right now I don't puree until silky smooth (I used to puree it with water, I don't anymore). But some foods they won't eat until it's really finely chopped - broccoli, for instance.

I'm just wondering!

Baby food is usually applesauce consistancy stuff.

Stage one...very smooth applesauce consistancy
Stage two...Gritty applesauce consistancy
Stage three...chunky applesauce consistancy

Most skip stage three because babies are usually going to your table food by then, or they don't do well with the mixed consistancy of chunks and the applesauce stuff.

That is just the basic overview of it.

Ahh, thanks. Some foods they eat more chunky, but others they have trouble with it. Sometimes I get hung up on whether I should be forcing the chunkier foods instead of giving in and making it smoother, and then I figure who cares, they'll move on when they're ready.

I do not remember how far apart are girls are, but my girls (well 2 of them)went from eating stage 2 baby food (which I found to be the same as stage 1 just a bigger container) and cut up regular food. The only thing they ate before that really was vanilla wafers, bread, and sliced bananas.

I give them chunked food or things that can easily eat like pretzel sticks.

I may finely chop veggies and mix them in things so they eat more of them.

I always thought of baby food meaning that it was pureed and table food is in a form that you would consider eating it, just maybe cut smaller. Those stage 3 things are NASTY but I could never recreate the chicken goop with noodle and carrot bits so that the boys would eat it.

The difference as others mentioned is the level of puree. I still use the level 2 with my kids (2yo) to add variety to what they eat. Mostly I do it with the fruit (cheaper to buy the organic baby food than adult fresh organic) and add it to yogurt like an ice cream topping. For example, I add the earth's best pears and raspberries to greek style yogurt. For the most part they love it (some days my son is not a fan of plain yogurt ) and they love all kinds of fruit, so we go through a lot of seasonal fruit too. I don't puree their veggies, but we do steam so they are a bit softer than raw. The meat I cut fairly small. They do well with cheese, deli meats, olives, etc.
