#1151, "Reflux - How do you give Prevacid?"

2 of our 3 boys have been on Zantac, but have now been witched to Prevacid. The Zantac was in liquid form so giving it was easy. But the Prevacid is in the soluble capsules and not going well. How in the world do you give this to your babies? We have tried disolving it in a little water, but the syringe we were given is useless. Anyone have any tricks they would care to share?

Thanks.

The trips are 12weeks today.

Prevacid is tough. We initially had it compounded into a liquid, but you have to be careful as the efficacy of it can decrease as it ages. Sometimes getting one bottle compounded at a time and then giving it to all three (and thus never having a bottle age more than 10-11 days) works. Then we just would take an old nipple, put the nipple in their mouth (like a paci) and squirt it into the nipple. They would suck it down so fast!

Sometimes crushing it up and using formula to get it into them works...it depends on the syringe...I remember the ones that had nooks and crannies didn't work for us either.

When they get older, putting small pieces of the tablet into their mouth right before the bottle goes in worked pretty good for us. Even later, we would put it in a spoon full of their favorite baby food.

Hi,

One of my triplets is on Prevacid. Our pediatrician told us to dissolve 1/2 of the tablet in 1 oz of water and give via a bottle. So far it seems to be working ok. The first few days were tough as he adjusted to the taste, but now he drinks it fairly quickly. Good luck!

When my little boy was on it. We got the medicine in liquid form. We then did like the other pp said and put it in a nipple or we just put it in his mouth and made his swallow it.

I used to mush it up in a teaspoon of applesauce.

We have the dissolving tablets and I've always just stuck it in my daughter's mouth. I tried dissolving it in an ounce of water at first, but it wouldn't go through the nipple, and I didn't want her to miss anything.

She was 5 1/2 months when we started, and I'd stick it back in the corner of her cheek and hold her up semi-reclined (she drools a lot, so I didn't want it pouring out). It took about a minute, two at most, and 99% of the time she was fine with it; the 1% I stuck it in too far and gagged her. Now she opens her mouth for it and I don't even have to watch to see if she spits it out.

Our babies came home on and with those dissolvable tablet deals that we were able just to put in their mouth crushed in a little water and for the vast majority of the time they would just swallow it down.

Once the new year hit and our deductible which is pretty high on the insurance was back down to zero we moved to the capsules instead of the dissolvable tablets, the cost of the tablets was approx $175 per baby per month vs. the capsules that are $25 a month. My wife has been opening up the capsules and mixing the Prevacid in with their morning food, like apple sauce, etc. So far, that seems to be going OK. The Prevacid out of the capsules is a bit grainy and they have gagged on it a couple of times but for the most part they are able to get it down.

Not sure if this helped too much but the Prevacid has been very helpful and effective on our babies, I hope it is for yours!

One of my sons used the soluble tablets, not the capsules, so I'm not sure if this would work. He took 1/2 a tablet at each dose, which I mixed with water in the syringe. If you let it sit at all in the syringe, you are screwed for getting it out. I dropped the 1/2 tablet in the dry syringe, pulled in 5 ml of water, shook just until it dissolved, and started squirting while spinning the syringe at the same time. My son never took it all in one squirt, so I kept spinning the syringe while he swallowed. Once all of the liquid was gone I pulled in another couple of mils of water, flicked the syringe with my nail to dislodge whatever was stuck, and squirted away. Just keep it moving in there and it's easier to get out.

We had the compounded liquid until the girls were about 7 months then we switched to the solutabs. They could have probably taken them at about 5 months, but I didn't know they existed. I LOVE the solutabs because I just give them one and they eat it right up. But, they couldn't have done that when they were 12 weeks old. When we did the liquid we would put it in a syringe and let them suck on it and then once that didn't work we would squirt it into their cheek. Finally, I got a medicine pacifier (like a paci but it has a hole in the tip and a 1 oz bottle on it). I would put the medicine with either a little formula or sweetease (sugar water from the NICU) and they never had a problem taking it. Good luck!

We tried quite a few different techniques with my girls, but the most successful at that age was to place the solutab as far back in their cheek as it would go and then hold a pacifier for them to suck on. They were never big on pacis, but it distracted them enough to keep them from gagging on the solutab. The more saliva, the faster it dissolves.

Some days the pacis wouldn't work at all. Then we'd follow the solutab with a few sips of their bottle. Just enough to help dissolve the solutab and distract them from the foreign object in their mouth.

There was quite a big of gagging and spitting in the beginning, but they've gotten used to it now. Good luck!
