#1350, "How do I know when it's time to change nipples?"

Hi,
My guys are almost 3 1/2 months actual and 1 1/2 months adjusted. I have them on the 0-3 month nipple right now, but I don't know if/when I should switch them to the 3-6 month nipple. What should I watch for?
TIA!!!

Hi Rene!
I don't know what kind of bottle/nipple you are using, but I use Dr. Brown and switch to the next level when they started taking longer than 30 minutes to feed (it usually takes 15-20). I also noticed they would start to get tired and even fall asleep before they finished, and that was another sign it was time to up the flow. Just a head's up...when I made the switch they were so used to sucking hard at the slower nipple that they downed the bottle in 5-10 minutes and sometimes spit most back up. I had to teach them to pace themselves by stopping them every ounce or so to take a break. After a few days they were champions!

Hi there, I just made the switch and it's so great. Only one of my babies can handle it though. I just made sure I paid close attention to a few of the feedings and made my decision based on that. My boy that can handle it drinks his bottle just like he did before only faster. My little girl either guzzles it down and chokes/gags or she has it running all over her mouth. I did it for a few feedings with each to make sure it wasn't a one time fluke.

I just keep trying my others like once a week now to see if they can do it but so far just my one has moved up to level 2!

We used a Gerber nipple with slow-medium-fast choices. Ours switched around the 3 month corrected. They were getting really frustrated and taking way too long to finish a bottle. We switched with little to no problems and they were able to handle the increased flow.

The fast flow too has been a fairly easy switch - just did it recently not that they are 6 months adjusted.

good luck
