#14, "OK...who is NOT Sleeping through the night"

I admit, I'm jealous! I keep hearing all these stories of twins and triplets who were sleeping through the night by 4 months. Then, several of my friends have babies about my trips age and guess what? They are all sleeping through the night without any CIO or need to sooth back to sleep! My trips are 4 months old and still get up TWICE a night to eat. They go to bed at 7 but get up around 12 and 4 AM to eat. Every once in awhile we have a night where they only get up once, it is a taste of heaven I'm eager to try letting them CIO through the 12 feed but it seems that is only acceptable once they hit 6 months. We have tried soothing with pacies, etc. but it gets them more worked up. I'm not looking for answers, I have read all the books. I'm just wondering if there are other families out there who were not "so lucky to have babies that just slept through the night" to commiserate with.

oh my gosh, don't worry! i felt the same way when my boys were 4 months old. they didn't really, truly STTN (and i'm talking 12 hours of sleep a night, uninterrupted) until they were 7 months old. it might have happened sooner if we'd dropped their middle of the night bottle before we did. i could have, i was just scared to. but once we did that (and stopped waking them all up to eat when just one did), things fell into place.

there was some CIO at 3 am, though. not fun, but it's so worth it in the end.

Not to disappoint, but mine are 11 months, 9 adjusted and we still have one (little peanut DD) that either sleeps through or is up 2x! They all started STTN after we started 3 solids, but DD got sick a few weeks ago and is still eating everything in sight to make up for it. We let them CIO and the boys usually sooth themselves, but DD needs her bottle. We haven't done binkies in a long time.

My daughter has been sleeping through the night since 11 weeks. Thank God because her two brothers are putting me through the ringer. It isn't that they are awful, it is just that there are two of them.

I feel like my boys' sleeping is regressing and I, in an attempt to cope, are instilling bad sleeping habits. (i.e. immediate binky plugging, bottle feeding too quickly). I am just so damn tired.

I figure if they are like their big sister, it will be 15 months before I sleep again.

I am starting to wonder if I can do this without losing my sanity.

Ok..dont shoot me...but I have to brag on my babies..They are 6 weeks..and from their first nights once they got home..they almost slept all night..theyd go to bed at 9....up at 1am then up at 6. Well now...at 6 weeks...for the past 4 days...(please dont let me typing about this jinx it)....they go to bed at 1030p. and sleep thru the night and wake up between 8 and 830.

Occasionally they will wake up about 3am...but its only because they lost their binky...once we plug them back in their mouth....there straight back to sleep.
For us...the key to the long sleep filled nights...was not putting them in their cribs except for nighttime sleep...the rest of the time tey nap in swings, bounceys, etc. Also, the mainthing I think that keeps them snoozing all night..is that I started putting them down at 10-1030. If I put them down earlier they would wake up earlier..(6am) and i am not a morning person...i can barely function at 8am.

For us though, the 10p til 8am works out better. And even with the 10 hours of sleep for me...I think I could still sleep more.

Our triplets were just starting to sleep thru the night until they got sick about 6 weeks ago. Now, the girls get up at least once, sometimes twice to eat. It is really frustrating and if we try to let them cio, they wake each other up. They will be 8 months on the 9th! We are thinking about putting them in separate rooms so that we can let them cio.

I could have commiserated with you last month when my babies were 4 months too. They were NOT sleeping through the night and my husband and I were so frustrated!! Now, at 5 months they are sleeping 7-7 without a peep...it is heaven!
At 4months and 3 weeks, we decided to let them CIO and justified our decision because they had not been taking bottles at night anymore for weeks. They were waking up regularly because we took them out of their swaddles and they just didn't know how to put themselves back to sleep unless we rocked them and gave them their pacifier. Or they were waking each other up. One night my husband and I got up to rock babies back to sleep 11 times in 10 hours. Then next night we decided we wouldn't go get them and let them "work it out" on their own. It took 4 nights of crying, but they found their thumbs, learned how to put themselves back to sleep and sleep through each others' crying. Also those 4 nights were not bad at all! I tivo'ed a bunch of shows thinking I would be up all night listening to crying and have to watch TV to distract myself, but the crying episodes never lasted more than 20 minutes. I felt terrible while they were crying, but at 7am they greeted us full of smiles!
I am not suggesting doing this unless you know the babies are not crying out of hunger. Just letting you know what worked for us.

I was just as discouraged and frustrated as you. I know what you are doing through and hope it gets better soon!

Karla-
Mine are the same age and on the same schedule. They got to sleep at 6:30 pm and only wake up to eat but do wake up.

Carla-
How do you do CIO with all three in the same room? Mine wake each other up so I'm trying to figure out how to do it.

I did not CIO.

I kept them to a very strict bedtime routine (no cry sleep solution), and they slept 7 hours at 4 months. They slept 12 hours at 8.

I know you are tired, but in a few months you won't even remember this time!

I had to share my excitement. My boys only woke up 1x each to eat last night between midnight and 7 am. This is SO much better than a week ago when they woke up 8x in the same time period. I know it was probably a post election fluke (lol) but I will take it!

I think all babies are different & depending on their day habits & weight, begin STTN. Ours started going 8-9 hrs at 12 wks old but it wasn't until 4 wks ago making them 6 mths old, did they start sleeping 12 hrs. The reason it took us so long is that DH would do the 5am feeding for me so I could sleep b/c I was still waking up at 2am to pump. During Hurricane Ike, I did the 5am feeding but it was a BFing session for all 3 & I loved it so much that I dropped the pumping session & traded it for the BFing. I didn't want to let go & had a hard time when we did decide to stop. Basically, they could have STTN 12 hrs a long time ago but we kept it for our own selfish reasons. The day we decided we wouldn't feed them at 5am, they slept until 7am, no problems. I bawled my eyes out.

All I can tell you is that it will happen & probably sooner than later.

ahhhh two of mine still dont and they are 8.5 months old! we are exhausted here! we do not feed them when they wake up but we let them cry for at least 10 mins and they just get crazier they do not self soothe at all so we plug them in like 80 times during the night its making my husband and i crazy! when we put them to bed we let them cry and i wont go in unless they are full out screaming for at least 10-15mins then i give their paci back and leave they fall asleep pretty well they dont cry for too long but in the middle of the night they will not just put themsleves back to sleep i just want them to SLEEP without waking up for 11-12 hrs straight and i dont think its EVER going to happen

Man, no kidding, I have always been jealous of those who STTN because my daughter was 4 YEARS old until she stopped needing attention in the middle of the night.

My boys are almost 5 months adjusted, 8 months actual, and I wake them up twice to eat after they are down for the night. So they are not STTN but it doesn't seem as bad since I'm waking them and not the other way around. I'm getting so much more sleep with them than I did with my daughter that is seems completely doable.

I'm glad to hear there are others who don't sleep, I feel like much less of a failure.

It took us a long time to get all 3 sleeping through. (Only in the last few weeks!) We certainly weren't successful when they were 4mo old.

What we did-
We went to on-demand feedings over night. (Only feed if they woke up to feed). Then we fed them all at 5am. We just recently (and I'm talking last 2 weeks or so) stopped feeding over night. Now they are waking up around 6/6:15 (12 hours).

We did some CIO. I hated listening to them cry, but they usually put themselves back to sleep around 10/15 min.

Before you know it, they will be sleeping through-

Good luck!!!

Four months is SUPER early to be sleeping through the night but I think your hope is right around the corner given that they are already sporadically dropping one feed in the middle of the night....that is the first clue!!! I would say look for the second to drop in the next 4 weeks or so. I would be hesitant to CIO if they are really still feeding in the night. I knew it was time to ignore the wake ups when my DD was just nursing for 5 min or less...I knew she really wasnt getting nourishment...she was just wanting a little cuddle time. I confirmed it by offering her a bottle in the middle of the night and she would only take an ounce or so....but it took her to a little over 5 months to drop that feed.

You are not alone...it sounds like your babies are right on target!
