#1457, "When to switch to whole milk? Adjusted or Actual age?"

(AndyManofThree's wife speaking!)We have GGG trips born 10 weeks early. We are approaching their 1st birthday April 23rd and were hoping to switch to whole milk. They have been on breastmilk exclusively. Our Pediatrician says that they shouldn't switch to whole milk until their adjusted age (July 1) but we were wondering what others have done and what their expierence has been like. Our girls are great weights and are healthy. Thank you for any advice! I am very ready to stop pumping 9x a day!!

With my singleton preemies we switched at adjusted 1yr I have a 31 and 34 wkr. I imagine I will do the same with the triplets.

I also just wanted to say congratulations on making this far with pumping!!! that is awesome! having pumped for my singles after the NICU I know how hard and stressful that can be! I'm glad to see it can be done for three

Our pediatrician said to go by their actual age in terms of the foods their bodies could handle and their adjusted age for textures. We switched to whole milk at one year actual and they did fine.

I pumped for 11.5 months, so I see where you're coming from there, too! If you decide to switch at one year adjusted, have you considered eliminating some of your pumping sessions and see if you still get the same amount? As mine dropped naps, I dropped pumps and at the end I was just pumping 4-5 times/day and not at all during the night. I saw no drop in supply. Another thought is that since you probably can't just quit cold turkey, you might consider starting to taper off your pumping now and give them a combination of EBM and whole milk for the weeks between actual age and adjusted age hitting the one year mark.

My BBB triplets just turned 1 on April 5, they were born 14 weeks early. My big guy Dean was switched to whole milk,at 1, and has not had any issues. He seems to love it more than the formula and breast milk he was getting. My other guys were put on Pediasure basically for the extra calories. They are both small.

I even started to mix the pediasure with whole milk, they seem to drink more when its mixed.

Good luck,
Nikki

I just asked my dr yesterday and he said to wait for the adjusted age of 1. As a mother of older kiddos I think you can go by your gut. Do they handle other foods well?
